Anyone know of any camping spots around Seoul/Incheon? I have been
taking the ferry out to Deokjeokdo for the last twenty years and it is
getting a bit ridiculous to spend 20-30% of our vacation time in transit.
I'm looking for:
-car accessible
-secluded
-access to lake, river or ocean
-trees
-not inundated with locals
How about Boryung when the mud festival is not going on? |

You're never going to be alone unless you don't mind hiking a bit. I hear you can actually get away from people in Chiaksan National Park near Wonju. There's also Woraksan near Chungju and Mungyeong a little further south. They're all still fairly crowded during vacations though. |

You're never going to be alone unless you don't mind hiking a bit. I hear you can actually get away from people in Chiaksan National Park near Wonju. There's also Woraksan near Chungju and Mungyeong a little further south. They're all still fairly crowded during vacations though. |
Ah, but we usually go camping on the May long weekend and Chuseok
holiday. Koreans ALL go camping at the end of August. (when it is
unbearably hot and the roads are completely congested) |

In that case, I can assure you Woraksan and Mungyeong at least will be empty. I've been to both of them and they're almost deserted during the off-season. Chiaksan is supposed to be even more remote, but some locations require hiking. |

Not true. People go camping all year including winter. Those are the hardcore ones though but from April to October all campsites will be packed especially if its a long weekend. |

There is a dammed up river out near Inje that's turned into quite a nice lake. I went camping with some friends there last year and it was empty enough. There were some other fisherman there, but all in all, it was very peaceful and nice.
I recommend something with 4x4, or at least good ground clearance. We'd gone just after big rains, and likely would have gotten stuck if not for driving the Retona.
There are definitely nice places in this country to camp if you look for them. Another favorite of mine is finding the larger rivers (think Hongcheon) and driving along them till you find a nice enough place to pop a tent. Usually it's away from most people, there will be nice fishing, and it's free! Remember you can legally camp on river banks and lake banks in Korea. We spent a good 10-15 weekends last year out in the great outdoors, and not a one was spent in "Camp-u jang"캠프장!! |

| Look at a map and try to find some river or seaside without awful public access, certainly further than 10km from a bus or train stop. If west coast, heading towards gangwha-do is probably best, in the interior near wonju is good. Or north of Seoul. |
