How times have changed. According to the book Korea: How You Feel, adult English hagwons actually preferred to hire male teachers in the 1990s. Hiring foreign male teachers made it more likely that lots of female students would enroll. Now because of the widespread perception that foreign male teachers are alcoholic, womanizing losers who can't get jobs in their own countries that is no longer the case. There is a definite preference for female teachers now, especially young and attractive ones.

It is a crowded field. If I were a Korean man, I would probably be learning some English from Diva Jessica, a broadcast jockey (BJ) on afreeca.com.

They may do well in the male market but I'm pretty sure women are the major one for adult hagwans. The place I worked was usually about 70/30 in favor of females

That site is pretty obviously not for serious learners of English, so I really don't think it's anything about which foreign teachers need to worry much. Did you see how much Korean was in that example video in your article? I think there's room for some usage of a student's L1 in order to help ensure clarity or use time more efficiently, but that was virtually all Korean. I imagine that they're going to end up with immense student turn over, assuming they manage to stay in business in the long term at all.

If they're going to end up sitting through a five minute lecture in Korean to 'learn' a single colloquial phrase or idiom taken out of context, the people who actually need English will soon find out it's not really helping them write that email to their suppliers in the Philippines etc..and they will go elsewhere. Short skirts or not.

Classify it as motivation and not education.
These days company funds can't be used at the business rooms so easily. Using company funds for English education is still legitimate. I will applaud the day when a true English room salon opens up, until then this is a decent stepping stone.

I edit material for one of them. She used to work at YBM teaching TOEIC listening and from what I can gather is making significantly more money doing this shtick than working at her old job.

Just to add, if you guys look at the current YBM/PAGODA websites they are doing the exact same thing. This isn't just a single business or two, it is heavily prevalent in the adult EFL business.
