There are rumblings that Congress may ban people who give up US citizenship from ever entering the US again. Just petty and vindictive. |

I have read online about one American EFL teacher in Japan who gave up his U.S. citizenship.
Apparently, there's a pretty intense interview that is a part of the process. The people interviewing him put tremendous pressure on him not to give up his American citizenship and gave him the impression that they were basically going to refuse his request - although they didn't.
he's now a Japanese citizen. |

I was thinking about this last night and was wondering about something.
In the US, we use our Social Security numbers for reporting income. Korean banks never ask for our SS number. So how in the world will they know we're American? |
KB Bank asked for my SS number today when I opened up an account.
The first thing they asked me was "Are you American"? I said yes. Then they asked for a tax ID# which I was informed is the SS#
So what does this mean? That American IRS now has full transparency to our bank accounts even though we pay tax in Korea?
I want to dump my citizenship now too. This is rubbish. This 'war on terror' is going to far. |

Yes, you can give up your citizenship.
But you have to pay for it.
You must be a citizen of another country before you do that.
In Japan lots of American people have a hard time getting a bank account. I have been OK, but my Japanese wife has had to open up any account in her name.
I was recently audited by the IRS and was told that I owe them 7,000 bucks.
I made the mistake of exempting my foreign spouse by mistake.
Now I owe just 53 cents. WTF? |

Many Canadians with American citizenship have been dumping their American passports. I understand why. They are afraid of penalties and many don't know what's going on, so they're bailing on their citizenship. That's not what I want to do, but I don't like this behavior by Uncle Sam. It makes us expats feel like wealthy criminals. I don't get health care from the U.S. The US embassies don't care about us that much like in the old days.
I don't invest in anything abroad. I only go through an American brokerage. Most of us expats are not making that much money, and because the government screwed up the economy, that's why many of us have gone to Europe and Asia. As soon as I get my pension, it's going into my American account. I don't want Uncle Sam bothering me or to give Uncle any reason to. |

Singapore is a banking city. Plenty of Singapore banks would love to have your money. Bank of Singapore's loss.
HSBC is a criminal enterprise. If you bank with HSBC, you should close your account anyway.
Banks can afford the regulatory costs. I am not defending the underlying policy, but this is nothing to worry too much about. |
