Hi;
I have taught ESL for over 1,000 hours, in Korea and North America. I can verify this experience with letters of reference and employment verification; student evaluations; pay stubs in some cases; and executed teaching contracts.
If I can verify these hours, how important is having a TEFL or CELTA credential that includes a practicum?
I got by in the '90's with a TESOL course (I can no longer find the certificate/parchment, and the school is not returning my e-mails). I am deciding what kind of credential course I should sign up for.
Will I be competitive with an online TEFL that does not include a practicum? I teach ESL to adult learners, not children.
PLEASE NOTE: My questions is clearly asking about my competitiveness in the Korean labour market. People with poor comprehension skills and a twisted sense of personal boundaries might take my question as an opportunity to indulge in finger-wagging, intrusiveness, and pontificating about their perception of a practicum. Please respect my personal boundaries, and know that condescension and sarcasm are always unwelcome.
In terms of my competitiveness, what do you think? Thanks for any advice!

| Depends who you want to work for. British Council requires a CELTA or equiv, Wall Street recommends one, YBM aren't really bothered. Generally most hagwans would be more interested in your age, gender, nationality and looks than your past experience or TEFL cert. |

1000 hours of teaching do not equal a practicum.
1000 hours of bad habits with no feedback = 1000 hours of reinforced bad habits.
20 hours of observed and critiqued practicum allows for feedback, adjustment, reflection and improvement based on the outside eyes of the observer.
If you think that is unnecessary they why do legitimate schools and universities need "accreditation"?
(hint: outside eyes observing and providing improvement through feedback, quality control, adjustment and reflection).

I get the impression that Wall Street, at least the ones I have been to - Bangkok and Riyadh, are very interested in age and looks. |

I get the impression that Wall Street, at least the ones I have been to - Bangkok and Riyadh, are very interested in age and looks. |
Probably the same in Seoul, judging from their adverts. |
