Brave man bashing others from the safety of anonymity.

You're telling me in this day and age there's not one picture of you online somewhere? I find that hard to believe.

Please, for the love of all that's holy, NO. That wasn't my intent.

Smithington wants to bash others for their appearance, maybe he should make an example by showing us a picture of what must be his dapper, ravishing person.

Also, although skin cancer is relatively rare, 5 million people a year in the US are treated for it. That's something like 1 in 60 per year. I bet if you were one of those people, you'd sure wish you had your Vader mask, arm coverings, and white gloves on.

Skin cancer almost only ever effects Caucasians. Fair Caucasians especially.
Skin cancer is exceedingly rare among Asians, as anyone who has tried to get a mole checked out in Korea will have found. Most dermatologists here have no idea about melanoma, because they never come across it.

Mmmm. As the story says, that's Australia, not Korea. Having lived in Australia and New Zealand, the two countries with the highest skin cancer rates, I can tell you that that the sun is a lot stronger there then in Korea. The UV radiation rates are much higher. You will still find that Asians are in the low risk group. Generally, the darker your skin the lower the risk.

The average Asian, who gets regular exposure to the sun will not develop skin cancer amd walking around like one of the Imperial guards from star wars isnt necessary. I can understand if they are farmers and out in the sun all day. Still Korean skin is suited to Korean sun.

Intentionally tanning in Australia, as the news story you posted states, is a completely seperate issue/

If Koreans were so lacking in skin cancer, we would have heard some great trumpeting campaign about how rubbing gochujang all over your skin or some crap beat skin cancer.

You know, there might be a connection between Korean women looking relatively young well into their 40s and being "milfy" and the whole not exposing yourself to sun thing. Also, there is strong societal incentive/pressure, not just in Korea but in general, for women to try to look young and attractive. Unless Smithington is all about the wrinkles, face splotches, and turkey neck.

So, no commenting on bizarre ajumma trends on Daves. No cultural observations. No opinions on what we observe on a daily basis. No takes on Korean attitudes to the weather, fashion trends, or the debate over covering ones' face in public? Okay then, as long as we know the rules. I'll do my best to "get over myself." Thanks for your awesome contribution.

3,761 Koreans diagnosed with melanoma is a significant increase (33%) from 2,819 diagnosed in 2009, but it's still small (1 per 13,000 Koreans).

Compared to the U.S. numbers from the CDC:

In 2011 (the most recent year numbers are available— •65,647 people in the United States were diagnosed with melanomas of the skin, including 38,415 men and 27,232 women.*†

Which is about 1 per 4,500 Americans and according to the CDC 90% are non-Hispanic whites.

Clearly skin cancer is nothing to joke around with, but the rates among other western countries are much higher and the argument that Koreans wear the attire to avoid skin cancer, well who knows.

If skin cancer was the cause for the get up, you'd think the men would be covering up too. They don't, because it's not about cancer, it's about vanity and the fear of a freckle. Now, that's truly worthy of being ridiculed.

I don't see why covering yourself to protect against the sun is some "bizarre" idea. Its being increasingly recommended by doctor's around the world. That's like saying Koreans are "bizarre" because they don't like heavily charred food. Actually the "bizarre" people are the ones who continue to put themselves at risk through tanning and unsafe exposure and to eat charred food.

The issue here is tone and the way in you approach the issue and the wording you choose to introduce the topic and address the issue. People here constantly take Koreans to task over their superficiality but then come here and mock their clothes. You also do so from the standpoint that they are inherently "wrong". Its not a neutral analysis.

One doesn't have to be scholarly to address Korean anti-sun clothing, but one doesn't have to be contemptuous either.
