- Application: Application by in person or traditional mail.
No applying via email.
(The application deadline (18:00 p.m., June, 12th, 2015))
*All the application materials received from candidate are not returnable

You must give them your original diplomas just to apply? Geeze. Unbelievable.

Depends on the PhD. I've met a few "PhD™"s in Korea.

I did not notice the part they keep them. Do they have a clue how hard it is to get a new copy of a diploma? All three of my universities (each different) for BA, MA and PhD, will let you buy a new one. BUT on it in very plain view, it says it is a copy not an original. This is because there is ONLY one original. The one you get a graduation. If something happens to it, you go through tons of red tape to get one that says COPY.

I really want to venture a guess that they're purposely obfuscating the process so as not to get any satisfying prospects. Why? Maybe they're just once in a while obligated to put up a 'help wanted' sign.

Personally, I'm on my way to an MA in secondary education, including TESOL, just because I haven't got the licensure yet, and because teaching in Korea is something I really want to get back to, despite all the hassles I went through the last two times with just a BA; my MA isn't even born yet, so is that recent enough? I already suspect it's way over what I need, but it might bump my income a wee bit.

I agree that if I were pursuing a PhD, which I'm not, because, well, a PhD in secondary public school ed parallels this job requirement schedule for ridiculosity (this one really deserved a coined word, sorry), and I didn't feel Korea were really the place I wanted to be, for various other reasons besides the teaching factor, what Korea offers foreign teachers wouldn't draw me at all.

In the end, you've gotta be the guy who's just working to get the funds to pursue other interests and hobbies. Sad that way, but things are tough all over Korea.

And just to clarify, I'm not interested in pursuing a secondary teaching post in a US school. It's getting much too hard to be a Bible thumper/constitution defender in the US education system for that.

I like this part:

That's an underhanded way for them to get around paying benefits (required by law for longterm workers).

I'm in no way defending it, but technically many 'Visiting (asst) Professors' are limited to 2 year terms.

...because...the uni wants to save money by not paying benefits...

It's not a governmental rule; it's unis' scheme to pay less.

Not every uni has term limits. But most do (same deal with Japan) because they want to avoid paying into the uni pension plan (which kicks in, and in incrementally greater amounts, after a few years), etc.

Does this actually survive complaints at the Labor Board?

I see. Kinda wondered why that wasn't an eyesore to anyone else.

Well, if they stop your employment right before you reach "longterm" status, they are not required to pay. Maybe it's not technically illegal. Seems like tons of universities break the law though (and get away with it). Maybe the labor board is rather powerless/toothless? That's what I've heard. I mean just look at the guy who is getting sued by his hagwon (who didn't pay him) for 20 million. Strong WTF on that.
