The mers virus is apparently in Korea with several dozen confirmed cases, and the first death reported tonight. This virus appeared pretty quick and already has multiple cases. With a 40% mortality rate, I'm not sure if this is cause for concern given the lackluster performance recently with regards to public safety?
Think I'll be staying in regardless |

The South Korean Health Ministry said the son of a confirmed victim, who was being observed for possible MERS infection, broke a voluntary home quarantine and traveled to China on Tuesday. On Friday, the Korean Health Ministry confirmed he did contract the deadly virus, which marks the first confirmed case of MERS in China.
"We should have checked more actively and broadly on family related issues. We are deeply sorry about that," said Yang Byung-kook, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. |
They are sorry, so all is OK. Anyone who is suspected of having such a disease should be at the very least monitorred for their sake, and even quarantined for evryone elses.
On a similar note, i remember when the swine flu epidemic happened, 2 internationa students at my old university were found to be infected. They decided to quarantine them, but as 1 was male, and 1 was female, thy couldn't be put together in the dorm, and the block was full. So, they decided that as the foreign teachers apartment block had several empty rooms, that would be a good place to put the students, and the teachers didn't need to know. It wasn't until one of the admin staff mentioned it in passing that any of the teachers knew.
I wonder if there will be a similarly farcical approach to quarantine should this disease spread... |

If a kid has it, we are all fooked! How many kids do you see covering their mouth when tey cough? or washing their hands after using the toilet? The adults aren't much better. If they put the same effort into cleanliness as they do to dental hygiene, this place would be disease free! |

Any worthwhile precautions to take?
Avoid Suwon and Pyeongtaek? Wear a face mask when on public transport? |

This is a sound practice even without MERS on the table. |

Im a little concerned about this. I work in 2 different public schools in Incheon teaching afterschool classes. I was told today classes may be cancelled if the situation gets any worse. I am not going to be a happy camper if they make me take unpaid time off.
I am also starting to sorry about the actual virus. Itll probably be fine though.. right? |

There are times I'm glad to be in the boondocks of Korea.
That said, there's rumor we're boondockish enough they are going to send quarantine cases here. One school in town also closed because one of their teachers apparently was in contact with one victim's family over the weekend or something. |

Yeah, poor virus.
I think it'll be ok though. .In fact it seems to be going from strength to strength. |

According to the Korean language press, one of the first patients went to a small hospital and insisted to the doctor that he had mers. The doctor asked for a mers test kit from the local authority. But was told by an official that if they sent a kit, it's admitting that they officially have a mers case and it wouldn't look good, and to test for other things. So the patient went to a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th hospital. All having the same result. However, in that 4th hospital he threatened the official that he'd go to the press if he didn't get a mers test.
Because of that, all of the people, they could find, he came into close proximity of are quarantined. |

Progress via catastrophe.
(Very sadly) the story of many countries. Cultural change only happens when it is absolutely forced by circumstances.
From what I read, sierra leone has been radically altered by ebola. People no longer touch or shake hands. Never mind crowd and bump into eachother.
Korea will have to shed some more Confucianism. |

Happened in Canada 15 years ago with a town's tap water being contaminated. Supposedly some town officials told the water services department to deal with it after the weekend, or just ride it out. Then it happened again like a year later in a different town on the other side of the country.. |
