They probably also recommend immediately washing your hands after every time you cough into them. Something most people, Korean or not, do not do.
Just because they recommend it, doesn't mean its highly effective. The WHO also recommends using blow dryers instead of paper towels and not touching the door handle of the bathroom (which probably does more to spread disease than any mouth covering, which in turn exacerbates the door knob problem). Do you get vitriolic and folks who use paper towels instead of standing for 4 minutes drip drying? Do you get outraged over people touching door handles and not using their sleeve or a handkerchief?

I don't think some people have a proper appreciation to the degree that germs are out there and the true limits of mouth covering.
The point is that getting outraged over those practices is not proportional to the danger they represent. One could probably find at least one habit/practice you gain that is "unsanitary" but of negligible significance and be just as justified in haranguing you over it and declaring you dirty and uncivilized.

Doors tend to have handles and such for ingress and egress. Often equipped with a variety of locking mechanisms. |
Use a tissue from your pocket then dispose of it. I never fail to take a tissue into a public bathroom for that purpose. Or use your elbow to nudge the door open, or leave the door open for the thirty seconds that you're in the bathroom. There's plenty of ways around the problem. It isn't rocket science. If I can manage to do it, others can too. |

I'm willing to bet that the impact of such acts on your rate of infection is minimal at best.
If you can smell people's poop, you've already come into contact with it. It's too late. Or you can go full on Howard Hughes. |

I had it when I was 5 and then I gave it to my sister. She's welcome. Now the young pipsqeeks got a vaccine for it. |

| But, yeah, Korea doesn't have a good hygene habit. Cough without covering their mouth and not washing hands, not much obsession with bacteria. Clean the floor with the same dirty mop. Wash the mop out partially in the bathroom sinks and then clean the dishes from the teachers room out in the same sink. Oh yeah! |
