So originally I wanted to teach in the public school system in Korea, but my recruiter said that getting hired by them was unlikely because of my tattoo and anemia medication. So he switched me to private schools and that has been going rather badly. The first option was SDA, which I turned down (I'm Wiccan, I couldn't pretend that that was anything other than an epically horrible idea). Then there was POLY and Pagoda, both of which have bad reputations. I'm getting a little freaked out because I don't want to be shoved into a job situation that is not great. So here are my questions:

1. Are there any hagwons with good reputations, and if so should I ask about them directly?

2. Should I broaden my options by going through other recruiters/countries? My reasons for picking Korea were based on pragmatism, not excitement.

Keep in mind that I am a complete and utter newbie at this.

1) Hagwon and "good reputation" are an oxymoron.

2) Use MANY recruiters. If your current recruiter has your documents already (foolish on you) then get another set and don't send off your documents until you are ready to apply for the visa.

3) a Wiccan with tats and medical issues.... Korea is NOT LIKELY going to be a good fit. Either you will have to compromise on a lot of things or you will be headed home (at great expense) very soon after arrival. A matter of pragmatism.

2. They have hard copies of literally nothing. I can't get a visa until I have a contract, so why would they have my documents?

3. Okay then, what East Asian country would be a good fit for me?

2). some recruiters ask for the documents before hand.... kind of locks you in.

3). Probably none unless you are willing to make significant compromises. It ain't like home and "civil rights" aren't even on the radar.
Wicca means reject. It isn't mainstream and depending on the country religious persecution is fair game.
Medical issues often mean reject (by both employer and/or immigration) if discovered.
Tats can often mean reject if they are known about in advance.

Gook luck. You will need it; or be willing to say nothing about the 3 points and stay under the radar.

DITTO Man...

For a person who has tatts and Wiccan coming to South Korea, you're asking for probably the biggest case of shitshow on Earth unless you can hide that side of you... but you're you and it'll come out.

No hagwon is gonna hire someone with visible tatts whatsoever. Unless the boss is straight up crazy... Koreans (general pop.) don't even know what Wiccan is nor do they even possess the idea that alternative religions exists...

Medical issues... they ain't gonna risk that type of exposure to Kids. Have you seen MERS? 2400 school shut down for a whole week based on deaths of old people already dying...

Just letting you know that Korea isn't the most welcoming of very different/independent/outlying/outspoken individuals.

BUT again, if you can chameleon yourself to the point where you fool yourself, then go for it.
