Daniel makes an excellent point here.

RR as usual you just spout out stats with no context.
Quick example, my brother in law (he is korean) has a HS diploma.

He makes about what you quoted. He is 36.
How many hours does he work for that? Thats the key question...well it varies between 60-75 hours per week on a 6 day schedule.
He gets no free housing has two kids and a wife to feed.

So before you toss out the figure to try and create a little crap storm...put it in context.

You average HS grad in Korea may make 1.7 m a month but he works a hell of a lot harder then your average teacher and has a hell of a lot more financial responsabilities.

Also, as a college grad with no experience (this represents most teachers here on their first year) how much do you expect.

A new teacher in my home province makes 32 000 cdn per year and then can make it to perhaps 57 000cnd after 15 years...

now 32 000 is about 30 million won or if you prefer 2.5 per month.
However, a teacher back home pays way more taxes, has to pay for his housing and deal with other expenses.
As a fresh uni grad his savings potential is not comparable to a teacher here, not even close.

So please RR, lets put things in their proper perspective.[/quote]

Let's go over the salary of a teacher again.

2.0M per month

+300,000 housing
+100,000 ticket (average)
+50,000 health
+150,000 severance (average)

Total = 2.6M, and that's for a lot less hours than the high school grads.

We get a free apartment, a lower tax rate, and most of us only have to work 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. How many Koreans work 10 hour days, 6 days a week for their 2 mil a month with a higher tax rate and no free apartment?

When you work what your actual take home pay is and your free apartment you're really earning roughly in the low 40K range compared to Canada or many parts of America. And again I stress that's for a part time job.

How many 23 year old BA holders fresh out of university with a geography degree walk into a 40K a year job? Not many since the dot.coms went bust.

Underpaid? I don't think so.

don't be ridiculous. first of all, for the most part we are interchangeable waygooks, and having a degree doesn't necessarily mean you have a good or useful one.
and besides, would so many of us come here if we found the money unacceptable? we have easy lives and easy jobs here, and probably shouldn't complain so much. and i would bet that most of those koreans earning similar salaries to us are slogging their guts out at some chaebol office for 14 hours a day.

I agree. What real qualifications do we have? The ability to speak our own language?? Rolling Eyes A nice shiny white face???? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I think most of the slacker english teachers I've met here deserve half of what they make...

I think the saying is "you're only worth as much as you think you are worth".
It seems some of these monkeys are happy with their peanuts.

and of course stalinsdad, you are either worth millions and making em or could get a exec job just like that (snap of the fingers) back home. Laughing

Some also grossly over estimate their worth... Laughing
