Vile, repugnant and disgusting. Why the government doesn't seize this MERS crisis to start a campaign against this vile habit I'll never know.

The reason nothing is being done about it is that if Koreans could change one thing about Korea, spitting would be #265 on the list.
I for one would rather see a more efficient bureaucracy, improved health care coverage for catastrophic illness, better pension benefits, continued military upgrades and improved soldier welfare, continued education reform, continued maintenance of roads and construction of bigger highways, environment regulation and expanded use of green energy, funds for reunification, improved aid in humanitarian missions, expanding job opportunities for college graduates, encouraging young people to pursue a trade, lower energy costs, etc.
But yeah, compared to all of that, I'd like them to make spitting priority number one. After all, that sidewalk with its pigeon crap, dead worm, grime, and ants was so clean up until someone spat on it. I was just about to fry an egg on it, but then someone spat. |
Other societal problems can be addressed while having ads against spitting in public/private places and giving fines for it. It's called "multitasking." Like spitting and defecating in a public bathroom stall, using 2 to 4 orifices at once. |

Younger guys do it too all the time. I've had wads of spit almost hit me because some dude was spitting without looking where he was doing it. No apology, no acknowledgement, no awareness. I'm waiting for the inevitable day I see a guy accidentally spit on a passing toddler's head. I've already seen a guy hit a baby with his bike, and another burn a toddler with his cigarette. |

Don't usually see it in malls, at school, or the airport, even subway stations. Well, occasionally I see it in the subway stations. Considering the number of people using the subway's the bathrooms are remarkably clean. But sometimes I think the spit is the result of some perv wanking off. It's either spit, or the 'other' kind of spit. |

Spitting I understand. What I can not understand is the noise to it and the amount of times. I mean I spit and I try to be discrete and try to spit elsewhere. It seems for the average Kim in Korea most spitting means clearing deep down to the bottom of the lungs. Making a huge production of clearing and snorting. Then right into the middle of the street. Not to the side or towards a "acceptable spot", right there where they are standing. Try just a general spit or a swish and spit. Even the classic dribble.
It just seems like it is too much. I mean a person must either have horrible lungs or doing something wrong if one cigarette means having to clear there lungs ever second puff. I mean smoking is "supposed" to be enjoyable. For example one guy having a smoke break outside. Guy was in his late twenties. During the smoking of one cigarette he had to spit loudly about 10 times. It drove me bonkers never mind I was about 30 meters from him. If this is one cig with young person why smoke at all if it causes this much problem.
I just wished they showed some class and decorum.
I either have not noticed this before in the last few years or this behavior has got worse. |

Spitting is a macho demonstration of strength and virility. It is also claiming territory.
Manhood in asia has never been defined as consideration for others. |

Korea is evolving plenty fast enough. To expect overnight change would hold them to a standard that we don't hold ourselves or anyone else to.

Smithington didn't say it was one thing among many. He said for him, it was priority #1 and seemed baffled as to how it could not be so for anyone else.
Also, you can only have so many campaigns going on at a certain time. I'd rate a whole list of things as much more important than spitting. |

I dunno.. korea changes pretty fast when they want to.
The media has a huge impact. It would be pretty easy to put some narrative into one of the popular dramas about spitting being disgusting. Overnight, spitters would suddenly be viewed as antisocial wangtas.
Government can easily trigger societal change if they want. I just don't think they view public behaviour as important or realize korea has an image problem. |

Exactly, it's not as if they have to get together the top sociologists and cultural anthropologists in the world and conduct a fifty year study of the issue. Have some drama star refer to it, have some girl K-pop group sing about breaking up with a boyfriend because he spits, have editorials in papers condemn it, have the police enforce the %^&$# laws already on the books, and have the government start a public campaign against it. The situation can be changed in a very short time. And yes, it can be done without ignoring other social issues. It's not a matter of having to choose between tackling unemployment or spitting.
It can be done. And it should have been done a quarter century ago. It's vile, repulsive and it leaves a lasting and very negative impression on people who visit Korea.
The government can wrap up its campaign in "Korea Pride" terms or whatever they want, but they need to move on this. |

The spitting is very unpleasent.
I was having a cigarette in a designated smoking area outside a department store yesterday and I was wearing flip flops. The ground was almost completely coated in plegm and saliva. I realized then why my wife dislikes it when I wear my shoes in the house. When I got ho e I had to hose my feet off just to be sure. Then when I went to put my cigarette out in the provided receptical It had about a full cm of a thousand peoples spit in it. I nearly put my fingers in it to put my cigarette out. I still feel nausious thinking about it.
Granted, Korea has more serious problems but, my god... Sometimes its really gross |

Steelrails doesn't think spitting is a big deal because, unless I'm mistaken. he's on record here as admitting he engages in that lovely practice as well. He has no interest in seeing it curbed or having the police crack down on it.
Anyone who says they aren't disgusted by the spitting must have been pretty damned rough around the edges before they got here. |

You should see the spitting that goes on where I'm living now. Almost every man, woman, & child here chews betelnut all day every day. They start around age 6. Astonishing to see these little kids carrying around their kits: betelnut, pepper leaf, powdered coral lime, & cigarettes (to add to the chew).
The process involves frequent copious streams of blood-red spit, but it washes away in the rain. Folks here are very mellow. I'm toying with checking it out.
