Hello
You may remember me from sometime back ... I came here looking for advice as I had been warned I may not be renewed, well unfortunately despite much effort ... I haven't been renewed. I'm not surprised as my co-T have had so many wide ranging issues with me / my teaching etc. It's obvious they can't stand me and I've become their shared dislike thing that binds them together which has been getting me down quite a lot recently ...
I don't think I will get a decent reference from my main co-T / VP and I'm not sure what to do in regard to finding another job as I would like to stay another year or maybe longer.
I can't be the only person who has had this situation. I know I'm quite late too in looking for another job too .....
Also, I've tried repeatedly to join the China board and despite emailing Dave himself am still yet to be verified. None of the mods are in common with any of the boards I am a member of.
Thanks for any assistance. |

Unfortunately that is the normal, default position of many (though definitely not all) Korean co-workers that you will encounter.
Uniting against the outsider is the only way they can bond. If there was no foreigner then they'd be at eachothers throats instead. In short, they're impossible.
If you are to continue in Korea, you build up your own friend/ support network and stop worrying too much about what Koreans think. |

Most employers aren't worried about what at home would be considered to be a "reference letter".
What you do want and what they are legally obligated (under labor law) to provide is a certificate of employment (COE) that states:
Employer's name and company/school name,
Start date
End date
Job title and description
and optional if you desire it, salary and hours of work.
They are required to sign it and place the school stamp on it.
They can charge a small fee (up to 300 won) for making/printing the document.
Get a couple of originals made.

Hello
I would really appreciate some advice.
I'm aiming for jobs teaching older students / adults as I feel that as I am not a naturally bouncy / outgoing person then this is more likely to be suitable for me.
Has anyone got a recent review of Pagoda or YBM?
I've been told these are both reputable employers?
Thanks |

I know, I'm currently saddled with one of those aloof passive-aggressive types.
You can normally tell within seconds of meeting them- the poker face, the failure to greet. Then its like arrrgghhh not another year with a type A!!
If you've got enough in the kitty then do not hesitate to unleash on them. Because it gets too hard walking on broken glass everyday. |

Hi Jen,
If you are looking for work in China PM me. My last university is looking for someone.
I totally understand your situation in Korea. I also got a bad school once that treated me like a complete animal. I quit early and references were the least of my concerns. So, it happens. |
