Yes, not being bothered by spitting makes me Chuck Norris, Clint Eastwood, Arnold, and a backwoods Afghani/Chechen fighter all in one. |

It means that your standards as to what passes for acceptable public behavior are extremely low. Some things simply cannot be defended without making yourself look bad in the process. Save your apologist energy for a thread where you might actually have a reasonable point to make. There's none to be made in relation to this charming little phenomenon. |

There are ways to expectorate discretely when need be. In a storm drain, down a toilet, a side alley, and so on. I spit when I have to, but I don't announce it with animal noises and in full view of people in public places. |

I got spit on yesterday while waiting on a bench for my wife who was in a shop. Dude sat upwind of a crowd of people and smoked a cigg. After each puff horked on the ground and of course the wind was blowing little bits of spittle all over the people sitting down wind of him. I heard some Korean people calling him dirty but he seemed totally oblivious. I noticed a huge puddle of hork on the ground afterwards. Id guess he spat about 20-25 times in the same spot.
The Korean people were equally disgusted as me. But, rather than say something to him they just tolerated it. Had I the language ability I would have asked him to please stop. Back in my own country I would have TOLD him to stop right away.
Maybe if the youth of Korea were a bit more assertive the guy would have been forced to consider how disgusting he was acting. |

Not likely - Monkey see, monkey do! All the "young people" at my uni who smoke spit after every drag. It seems that older people smoking is like a tutorial for others. |

Im not sure if it was the spitting or the smoking that bothered people. It was a very crowded shopping district in the middle of the afternoon. As a smoker I thought "Wow that guys shouldnt be smoking there" but it was definitly the spit mist that made me move. |

If the police did not treat verbal challenges to older people as a crime worthy of legal compensation then a whole lot of things would be rectified pretty quickly.
Korea is basically a system that cannot be corrected because people stand to lose too much by speaking up. |

And just like the "Senior pushes the Freshman" situation in the universities, the downtrodden bide their time until they are on top, not to break the system, but to have their turn as masters, and continue the cycle of age based advantage! |

And one more thing: the enlightened few emigrate to more civilized countries, where people are treated with dignity and respect for, well, being humans, never to return. |

Government can easily trigger societal change if they want. I just don't think they view public behaviour as important or realize korea has an image problem. |
Or they're too busy embezzling money, fighting amongst each other, getting nothing done, and taking bribes to give a damn. |
