..as well as the SOLE reason the flag was at these state houses in the '50s and '60s was in opposition to granting legal equality to the same people they enslaved. You can't it up. Its amazing its even a debate and the bullsh*t argument of the various states its about some honorable thing as the reason they erected it up in the first place. Its on the SC statehouse because they opposed equality to blacks. End of story.

Now there's a bit of sense Wink

That is only the beginning.

All choices made by private businesses.

And?
The point being, private businesses or citizens can do what they want, display the flag or not. But that flag has no business flying over government buildings or on government grounds.

...

I was just querying this, generally American, assumption that a private choice is somehow sanctified because it is made by a private individual or establishment. I understand the thinking, but private choices are not somehow right by virtue of being the choice of a private entity.

I vaguely understand and sympathise with the folk who say it's to do with heritage, for good and ill it's part of the history of these parts. Like I say, as an outsider living here, I tend to view it as being more trouble than it has been shown to be worth. Gunning folk down in churches? It's simply not the right thing to do.

There is a huge difference between South Carolina's sovereign speech as the police power and Billy Bob's speech. In the case of Walmart and Apple, their speech is not the police power but we might still find them harder to ignore and more troublesome than Billy Bob's fetish over his "heritage."

D.C. Residents Say Take Down Jefferson Memorial, Rename Washington, D.C.

Asked to weigh in on Confederate controversy, one man suggests renaming the capital "Black City" or "Mixed City."

Washington DC is racist. George Washington owned slaves. Rename it "Black City". Yes he actually said that... how about renaming the country Blackistan...

Sorry, no to renaming DC.

I think if you want me to expand on why I oppose renaming Washington, D.C. or demolishing the memorials to slave-holders, then you might make a new thread.

That's hardly a representative sample of the District's population, now, is it? It's not a scientific poll and the journalist actually suggested "maybe take a poll." The viewer has no idea how many other people were interviewed and what they had to say.

DC's nickname is Chocolate City, but these days no race is over 50% here. That dude is 10+ years behind the times....

Really? Franklin Square has a bunch of homeless people, but I don't really see them elsewhere (although I am aware there is a significant # in the District). NYC, on the other hand, is starting to look like the pre-giuliani days...

Well, I'm being a bit facetious, I live several hours away from DC so I don't know too well what it's really like. But walking from Union Station one night with my wife, yielded a good crop of scary homeless people. There was a bunch of them living in tents under one bridge we walked past. Quite surly angry-looking people.

San Francisco has them all beat in the homeless sweepstakes.

Yes, yes, and yes. UN Plaza was like some post-apocalyptic scene.

I wouldn't dare slow my pace, the one moment I slowed to look at my map, someone was right on me begging for money.

Obama supporters in San Diego expressed their support to tear down the “racist” Mount Rushmore granite sculpture and replace it with homosexuals or something more politically correct.
