Not all jobs are posted by recruiters. But if it was easy to get good situations were easy to get then you would see at least a few of them occasionally. That one never sees them at all or if they do it is for a non male.shows that good situations and jobs are rather uncommon in regard to teaching in Korea.
Possible is not the same as typical.
The stupid camps i used as as example somehow always get people desperate enough to do them . If esl Korea was actually good overall then they wouldn't.
Why go somewhere where good teaching situations are uncommon and rather poor teaching and employment situations are the norm?

Want to hear some unbelievable sh*t? Koreans are now charging big bucks to foreigners to do free talking in Korean. Four foreigners talk with one native Korean for four hours. The cost: 85,000 won each. (And that's not even for one on one.) The Korean makes 340,000 won from this (85,000 an hour from a block). Just for "free talking". |
Is this a story some Korean told you in the pub? Unless you actually met the foreign mug who paid 85,000 won for free talking with a Korean or you can link to the advert I'm afraid I'd have to agree with your description of 'unbelievable' |
Actually, the cost is up to 114,000 won now for the free talking session, but this time is it with three foreigners rather than four.
http://www.meetup.com/talktomeinkorean/events/223327920/
114,000 X 3 = 342,000 (They were smart enough to start asking for the internationally strong U.S. dollar rather than the weakening won.)
85,000 X 4 = 340,000
(so the same)
Strange things happen in the world, man. 'What's the Fox Say?' gets a half a billion views, 'Gangnam Style' more than twice that, and native speakers teach English FOR FREE:

Ok but she's flogging it as a tour not a conversation lesson. If she's also going to get the participants to fork out for coffee, public transport and whatever cost there is involved in the other activities, she's really taking the piss. Plus there's no evidence anyopne took her up on the deal. I can't see what the market is to be honest. You could scam tourists out of 100 dollars for a tour but they'd want it in their language or English. I imagine the vast majority of people studying Korean here are either students or English teachers and both groups are notorious tight wads.
She's making a good point about needing to do things in another language but I'm not sure you have to actually physically do them. The good old fashioned role play in the classroom can be just as useful and you don't waste time getting to the places to do the things. Are they going to be talking about stuff while jostling for space on the subway escalator? Plus if they have to carry out some kind of mission that involves interacting with the general public it's more than likely they'll respond in English anyway. Still, good luck to her. |

Pretty much, it's very easy for the average korean to make friends with a person who speaks english and get free tutoring, obviously not of the same quality. Then there are skype peeps with CELTA's and 5 years experience who teach 1 on 1 for about 10 dollars an hour and they are not that hard to find. Then you get people accepting less than 20,000 an hour - 1 on 1 that push it down for everyone (qualified people). Group lessons obviously you can make more (maybe 40,000 if you are lucky) but they are much harder to fill. There is barely anyone doing it successfully on a consistent basis.
However I don't think you are going to get any foreign peeps willing to pay that much for Korean lessons, even the ones from rich families will be shrewd. It works both ways. |

Pretty obvious first conclusion that people who either have worked in low paying jobs or straight out of uni graduates realized they can earn an ok salary for their level of experience whilst travelling. With cultures and countries more open these days travelling has become more widespread, people in their droves are trying to go out and do it. With the increase in supply of course wages are going to drop especially with these countries not caring so much about quality but cost rather.
People will be willing to work longer and take less than you, decent teachers pushed out of their jobs. Poor treatment of teachers, it's getting worse every day. It's not yet a terrible life but honestly I know someone with a psychology degree working for 800 dollars a month. With people like him being willing to accept such low wages there is little chance (I won't so no chance), for those who want to actually build something out of it. This is especially the case in Asia, degree holders working for 500-700 dollars, although the average is still a lot more! The more these people gather the tighter the squeeze on experienced teachers will be; "Why would I pay you 3 times more than him?!".
If your question is why is the market flooded? Ease of access to said market, low minimum requirements, travel, good weather, large amount of males coming for exotic girls. Probably more reasons but interviews are pretty easy in general and you are not hard to replace for someone cheaper if they want to! Trends speak volumes and I don't see TEFL returning to what it was anytime soon I see it dropping much further. |

I agree. The first post was downright hilarious. I could hear in my mind the voice of “Cheddar Cheese” explain what they are really talking about then Chicken says, “Never mind.” |

But don't forget what she said when she was doing it with Jane Curtin. That would be what she would say to edwardcatflap |

There's evidence they went on the tour but no evidence they paid 100 dollars each. They probably got money to appear in that video. Or at the very least a free lesson. I still don't get the walking around and eating part. I suppose it's to cut down on overheads. If people pay for their own food/drinks the company gets to use the cafe/restaurant as a classroom free of charge. Canny. |

Maybe when you're in England you can make an English immersion tour for the immigrants/tourists. (I'm thinking about doing the same thing in the U.S.)

Better make sure you can speak English properly first |

Looks like I've spent too much time with non-native speakers.
(I've heard so many Koreans say "make a boyfriend/girlfriend" that I've started talking like that, too. It's seeped into my subconscious.) |
