Don Oberdorfer, a former Washington Post diplomatic correspondent who chronicled international news from the Vietnam War to the fall of the Soviet Union, earning a reputation as one of the most insightful, fair-minded reporters on his globe-spanning beat, died July 23 in Washington. He was 84.

After retiring from The Post in 1993, he taught at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and chaired its U.S.-Korea Institute. His 1997 book, “The Two Koreas: A Contemporary History,” later updated with scholar Robert Carlin, was regarded as a seminal work on the Korean peninsula.

I likely wouldn't post this on any other board, but, since this is a Korean-oriented board, I thought some people might know him and his book.
I read The Two Koreas about ten years ago or so. It's a good read, more journalistic than academic, but still has a lot of interesting bits of information.

I read his book soon before or after moving to Korea in 2001. Was pretty good. As you said, more journalistic than academic. |

His book was required reading for all the classes I took in grad school related to Korea, and was influential for sure. When I met the former ambassador/negotiator with North Korea, he had the book lying on his desk. |
