|
|
My job is pushing me to take private health instead of nhis. It saves them money so of course they are pushing it.
I've been working there for a few days now and have signed a contract, but have not been to immigration yet. I'm currently on a D-10 visa.
There is another pretty awesome job opportunity that is quite likely mine as I'd be replacing a friend.
I'm wondering, is private health actually so bad? Keep in mind that I'll be needing some minor dental work done, but no other health problems. The job I'm at is decent. Hourse aren't great, but easy work.
I'm also worried that my current job could cause problems for me if I leave. I'd actually stay till the end of the month if they wanted me to, but obviously wouldn't go to immi(and they'd know that.)
I've pretty much have to decide by either fri or Monday. If my current job doesn't give in to my demand for NHIS I think I'll quit and take the other job.
But is it worth it? What would I be losing out on(and benefiting) if I take
private health? |

When I worked at Wonderland, they pulled the same shenanigans. There is no benefit to taking the "private insurance" through your employer. They're going to take the same amount out of your check and if you get sick, maybe your employer will pay 50% instead of the 75% the national health insurance would cover. If you have a major expense, your employer might fire you just so they don't have to pay for anything. If you have national health insurance, it becomes a non-issue because your employer would only be paying a 75,000/month flat rate no matter what medical care you need. |

What about your pension? If you don't get NHIS then they are not going to enroll you in pension either. Then what about your tax rate? They are probably going to charge you 3.3%. |

Thanks for the responses guys, but I really have 2 questions:
I signed a contract, but have not been to immigration so I'm still on a d-10. I've been working though...so can my current workplace cause trouble for me in terms of taking a new job?
Also, is private health so bad?
Thanks |

Actually, I have a 3rd question.
Since I'm on a d-10, is it necessary for me to get a new health check? If not, it's another point for me to argue as they tell me I need one for the private health and I'm sure they'll tell me I have to pay for it! |

National health vs private health...
You are required to have national health. If, 10 months from now the NHIC discovers you then they will come after you for 100% of the unpaid premiums from your initial date of employment whether you have private insurance or not.
Private insurance takes over where national health leaves off. It is not an either/or scenario. They won't pay for what NHIC covers if you are on an E2.

I just got enrolled in the pension and my boss told me today "I need to change my health insurance", "so that she can pay my pension." I asked her what I have to change it to, and she said she didn't know!
Currently I have NHIS. And paying tax at 3.3%.
Basically she is trying to get more deductions and call us "Independent Contractors" when we are not.
Do I *have to* change my health insurance from NHIS? I don't understand why I would have to do that.
I am going to contact the Pension office on Monday, but if anyone knows what she is talking about, please let me know what is up. Must be some sort of money saving hagwon scam I imagine. |

You can go to the local -gu office to get it setup, will need a Korean with you.
As for the tax, just make sure that you do two things:
1. Check that your boss is reporting your income correctly
2. Get a tax return at the end of the year since you have been overpaying on tax.
As for the OP:
Private insurance here is additional insurance, generally it does not cover basic heath care stuff and is intended for long term care / hospitalization / specialized treatments etc. |

Isn't it legal to have private health insurance so long as it is comparable to NHIC? I feel like I read that somewhere. |

You shouldn't be paying 3.3% if you have NHIS. The only place you might be charged 3.3% is if they are giving you a housing allowance portion which is not taken into consideration when calculating NHIS or Pension or salary tax.http://www.nts.go.kr/eng/help/help_52.asp use this calculator to see how much tax you should pay. If you salary is 2.3 enter 2300. |
