Im on 2.3. I save around 1 million of that per month (around 1000US) with absolutely no belt tightening. I literally have money burning holes in my pockets. Im also a gym bunny and spend easily over 150US/month on supps as well as gym costs.
Im not sure why everyones going bananas. This gives you a MASSIVE salary buffer to avoid living pay cheque to pay cheque.
Compare this with Japan where i was lucky to come out with 400US/month (but closer to 20,000yen/month), or China where i was saving around 5-600US/month, or Thailand where i was saving about 300US/month...
I dunno... reports of its decline seem rather exaggerated. |
Your numbers are beyond bad. 20- 30 dollars a day is big money? Maybe - if you are a middle school student.
Korea isn't so inexpensive .

and 1 million won isn't around 1,000 US either.
So many people on this board exaggerate. |
I currently have just over 5000 UK pounds sat in my bank. I came to korea right at zero (with about 2 million won in cash from china). My contract started November 2014. Do the math. To be honest i maybe even save a little above the 1,000,000 i said. Im not trying. I just dont need to spend that much money. I have a cool as shit bike to cycle in the countryside, i have some nice binoculars to go stargazing. Ive got all my snowboard gears id ever need, ive got a gym membership which i use almost every day, ive got a longboard to ride about on if the weathers good and plenty of hills nearby, and ive got an xbox and laptop filled with games along with a guitar to plink on. Aside the snowgears and laptop, theyve all been bought in korea. And in my downtime, ive got a job i need to go to.
Am i living a terrible life in some way? Honestly, id spend more, but because my day is pretty much busy enough with work and hobbies, im not quite sure what else i need. Im mulling over a new telly at the moment... i dunno. Im not a troll, i have a happy and comfortable life on my appalling salary. I really dont know what to tell some of you guys? You seem miserably unhappy despite raking in the money. Maybe you need some outdoor hobbies or something? |

| You didn't mention dating, going out with mates, or traveling, which were my biggest expenditures when I was in your position. Hotel rooms, Meals in decent restaurants, drinks at the weekend at 6 quid a pint, which is how much you pay in Itaewon nowadays. If you don't do any of that you will save a lot more than others. |

| I thought I did. Okay, that also includes going out clubbing now and again, hanging out on weekends and travel. I visit my mates in Thailand, roam about Korea and go to Japan for snowboarding in winter. So you know... I don't live in Seoul though. Perhaps then Seoul life has finally caught up with Tokyo a bit. Now I'm not addressing you guys, you have your expenditures and standard of life you've decided you need, that's up to you. But the idea you're going to live a life of penury and misery teaching in Korea is just silly. |

Sounds reasonable. I used to spend around a mil a month when I was single too. Still do actually. Geno123 is a well known prophet of doom on this site. |

Your post ought to be about how you "live the budget life style" , not about "raking in the money", Which is where your numbers don't add up.
Besides which more often than not Korean employers aren't particularly good to their teachers. That is where one thinks more about one's salary. |

since you were last in korea conditions have gone down.
My numbers are right. Just cause it worked well before doesnt mean they work out nearly as well.
Anyway what ought to be most well known is that most posters exagerate what they earn by around 30%.
Not wrong to shine a light on it. |

So I guess you mean he should be buying a house? The average age for a
first time buyer in the UK is 31 these days. If he saved 5 grand a year for 4 years he could put down a mortgage without going to his parents for help, which is what a lot of young people in the Uk are really struggling to do these days. |

You think that's a lot of junk? We had twenty big boxes of stuff moved the last time we re-located. Probably 75% of it my wife's. |

| Even at my allegedly nightmarish apparently worthless pay rate im still getting to see the world, enjoy my many fun hobbies, meet lots of cool people, stay fit and healthy, hold down a nice job i don't remotely hate, and on top of this, squirrel away some money for retraining when i decide to pack it all in and do something else. The sky is not exactly falling at the moment. |

Then you certainly must have a house. Mostly for the wife, of course. |
