I have to say, that is a rather snipe comment.

Sorry my terminology probably sounded a bit harsh but I didn't intend it in any sort of way. You know what I mean though regardless.

He means non-vocational and to be honest the amount of money you have to borrow to go to university nowadays, I tend to agree with him.

Yeah but there exists the problem that in many countries in Europe, university is free (even for some MA courses). So you will always have people doing such things for free whilst getting a bursary to do so. Truth be told I got lucky, I doubt I could have afforded to do a degree if I had not got sponsorship.

I would think it completely insane to do something with no career prospects and pay tens of thousands of dollars if not hundreds of thousands to do so. Wow! Overall though free education is definitely more of a blessing than anything - even with the downsides.

Many? I think you'll find there are one or two Scandinavian countries at the most, which all have prohibitedly expensive living costs.

Well for a start it's much more than one or two countries in Scandinavia and there are loads outside of that region too. Germany, France, Scotland, Malta, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Finland. That's eight right there. Free education is rife in Europe and there are many more places pushing for it - only a matter of time.

Granted they do not all support free education for internationals but I know quite a few TEFL teachers from these regions with an extremely high level of English. Not to mention a lot of them have universities in the top 100 if not top 50 in the world. So they are pretty decent degrees you get.

The cost of living in a lot of these places isn't that much different from South Korea, the rent is actually cheaper in a lot of them and sports facilities etc are cheaper also. Overall you'll probably spend the same amount and you can work there legally whilst you study in a lot of them.

South Korea is pretty expensive dude, even mainland China is. Living costs in the US by comparison are pretty similar. You will always pay the same for international travel, petrol, and international food is expensive too. Luxuries like cars, clothes - same price. SK isn't cheap by any means and the salaries given to TEFL teachers aren't great either.

Not to mention rent in SK, you are paying over the odds for a crappy apartment. In America that money would go further and get you something better.

The U.S. dollar is strong; the Korean won is weak. (But it looks like the Canadian dollar is even weaker for some reason.)

World Traveler that is because of the price of oil. Canada's Dollar generally follows it.

The US economy is finally picking up steam with many state unemployment rates falling under 5%. Also, have you seen the exchange rates lately? Falling and falling fast. Ain't going to get better any time soon. It will only get worse. I don't think you're going to see many folks sticking around. Believe me, now is the time to start getting picky or just wait a few months and try again. I'm sure by 2016, the market here's going to flip. Not to the extent there will be new demand for English, but due to problems on the supply end.

...but I agree with the author on this one:
"One person on this thread was strangely optimistic saying that things are rolling back over from an employer’s market to a teacher’s market. I think this is a case of wishful thinking because even a basic knowledge of Korean demographics makes it clear that there will be fewer and fewer positions in hagwons, public schools and universities as the years go by."

You mentioned 34 hours-I take it this is 34 regular class periods? That is MORE than just about any job advertised in Korea. It's too much work for 2.1 million won! I have seen jobs in kindie elementary hagwons that pay 2.5 million won per month. But then you will be in school from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or even to 7:30 p.m. Some hagwons give you 25 teaching hours but still pay you 2.1 million won.
34 hours for 2.1 million won is a bit mean. Mad

No, don't accept that job. FYI, I recently noticed a job advertised on a Facebook page for teachers in Jeollanamdo province, south of Gwangju. The job was 2.1 million won for about 30 hours. So far so good. But there was no apartment, only an offer for the school to pay 300,000 won of the monthly rent. No mention of key money, or flight payments or pension or anything. It's not good enough. Don't accept jobs like this.
