I've read through a lot of postings of people asking for help or advice. I'm appalled at the many rude and sarcastic comments they receive.
Everyone's here for help and support, but so many people are responding with such dick comments.
Just stop.
And yes, bring it on. I'm expecting some of those comments on this post. |

I think many of the members of this forum become frustrated at the number of repeat questions. People join the forum, and then immediately ask the same questions that everyone else has just asked a week previous. If people would actually take a moment and attempt to help themselves by doing a search and reading the answers, it would make this a much better place.
I have found that people joining the forum seem to be severely lazy and want people to spoon feed them answers.
Good luck with life. I think you're going to need it if an internet forum sets you off this much and makes you confrontational. |

The above X2
Plus, you'll often find that new posters come on with a question that is overly generalized, but they then get defensive when those with 3, 4, 5, 10, even 20+ years of experience ask for clarification or additional input. Either that, or when an answer is forthcoming, they negate the input and stick to their misquided guns. Of course that's going to set some people off.
Most people genuinely think that at majority of the people who read what they've written catch 100% of their meaning, when in reality, a larger percentage actually grasp 30% or less.
So people new to the forums take note:
1. Read through the FAQs and try to find previous answers posted to your question of similar questions.
2. Run a search to find out information that may help to either answer your query, or better inform a question.
3. If you want advice, cool, that's what many on here are happy to provide. Having said this, take the time to think through your question considerting numbers 1 and 2 above, and make sure that the meaning is clear and to the point.
4. If someone provides a snarky answer, let it roll of your back. It is a forum after all. Glean whatever you can from the input and ask again, perhaps rephrasing if necessary.
5. Don't get ticked off if someone doesn't give you the answer you think you should, or want, to hear. Again, reapproach your avenue of inquiry and drive on. |

The OP is just whining here about the answer he got in this thread.

Well, I will answer one of the most often asked questions here that is really stupid:
Q: What documents etc. do I need to send to my new employer?
A: Unless they are members of this forum, read your question, and know who you are, why ask here????? ASK THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

This forum only really has a reputation for dickheadedness these days. Its the reason why so many people have joined other types of social media for advice etc.
As for being a repeat question, whether or not someone is asking something for the umteenth time shouldnt be an excuse to act like an arse - there are plenty of people in this cuntry being rude, I dont know why we have to add to that. |

This. Great question. I have no idea. I agree with the OP that this is appalling and should just stop. I second CentralCali's assessment of the whining. I triple PRagic's advice and support for pmwhittier. There are others, and my apologies for not naming them all, as they have contributed so much to the myriad of threads over a dozen years. It is sad that drive-by posters do not take the time to read through the discourse available here before shooting the messengers. |

Personally, I think one reason is because the threads don't get locked after the question is answered. Another forum I go to often is Thaivisa. There are no rude and sarcastic replies there, really, none at all. I've often wondered what the difference is between the forums. I think one reason is that on Thaivisa, the thread is locked after the question is answered so threads don't degrade into pages and pages of two people piss fighting. That really degrades the feeling of the whole forum.
It also seems that the mods here are rather lenient, and yet some people complain profusely about them, while the mods on Thiavisa are strict as can be, and members seem quite happy about it. It reminds me of rules in the classroom. A lax teacher has a rowdy class and when they try to get control back students complain like heck, while for a strict teacher the kids seem quite happy to behave and they know just what's expected of them. |

Pretty normal for ESL expats, especially on a forum where they can be so without any consequences (mods don't care/no real life implications). They also seemingly think they are experts in something and have have a know-it-all attitude. So when someone new posts something that is obvious to them, they think it gives them a right to be sarcastic and rude even if said question has been asked a million times (it obviously doesn't).
I also genuinely believe being an English teaching expat in Korea over the last 5-10 years has not been easy life and it's getting a harder so the older ones have a somewhat a bitter attitude, not all expats are like this. That's just my opinion anyway. There are some really good people on this forum though who give extremely good advice, ironically a lot of them are newer members(last 5 years). Just ignore anyway who acts like an ass, basically.
It really makes me wonder if these people are complaining at questions being repeated, how horrible they must be in the classroom - where you get repeat questions all the time. Haven't they learned to deal with it by now? |

This. Anyway, these people complaining at questions being repeated, like students in the classroom, like where you get repeat questions all the time? How do they learn, like, you know? I just tell them to ask a teacher, because they know everything! Not me, though, because I know basically nothing anyway. |

I think this might be the most pertinent question that has been asked on Dave's ESL Cafe for a very long time. Yes, there are some quite nasty and negative comments on this website. It does surprise me also that people feel offended that I have asked them a silly question and wasted their time. I am surprised, because if people aren't interested in a question or a problem, or think it's silly, they don't have to answer it.
It's not as if OP's were coming up to them in Starbucks and constantly asking the same question. |

Having not visited this forum for a while, I was also asking myself if I was imaging it that these boards were being filled with even more degenerative back biting of other posters as compared with before. The search function of previous posts is not the best here, and so it's understandable that some people will ask repeat questions. You can choose not to answer them if you don't want to.
I would like to think that we represent foreigners in Korea as professionals who want be treated seriously and be respected for the skills that we can offer. Reading a typical post here doesn't give this impression. It would be nice to have this forum cleaned up somewhat. |
