I apologize because I am sure this has been asked a few times but I did a quick look through and didn't see the answer I needed. I currently work at a public school (EPIK) and have a for a few years. I recently finished my masters degree and I want to apply for some university positions for the coming year. If I get hired for a university position will I need to redo my documents (degree and criminal check). Mostly, I am wondering about the criminal check from Canada. Also, does anyone know if it is true that RCMP criminal checks no longer need to be stamped by the Korean consulate in Canada. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks |

If you are simply transferring your visa sponsorship from one employer to another or doing a change of status from E2 to E1 or E2-D10-E2/E1 you do not need new documents for the process.
What the employers require for themselves is another matter.

From my personal experience at a few places, the copies that immigration have on file will suffice. They may also ask for a Korean background check. |

...which is super simple to obtain. Police hdqtrs have a desk that runs your ARC number for offences & voila, 15 minutes later, hands you a colorful stamped legal document. Free too. |

Great!! Thanks for the information. I think I may need to do the RCMP check though. I came here in 2010 and the criminal check from my local police station was sufficient but I know they now want the RCMP one. |

Yeah, probably should have added that. Last one I had done, I think the whole process took maybe 10 minutes or less |

Please let us know how it goes. I've seen that a lot of universities are requiring a couple of years of university teaching experience to qualify for the jobs. Catch-22 to be sure, but that's what I've heard. |

They say that but I also know someone who was hired last year with a masters unrelated to teaching and only hagwon experience. I am not applying in Seoul or any of the big universities so I am hoping with an MA TESOL and 6 years public school I might get lucky. |

A few uni's get around the 2 year required teaching experience by hiring people in a 'language centre' which is not a department uni position.
They won't get the proper funding, but you won't be awarded the needed title may lose out on the generous vacation time that comes with it. |

It is on all of the job advertisements, but in name only. I know at least a dozen people, myself included, who have been hired in the past 4 years to work in English / TESOL (MA) / Literature departments without any experience at universities, just public school and or hakwons.
Edit: Just wanted to add that references are super important. They will check your references. Give them numbers for previous coworkers who will sing praises for you. It is probably the single most important part of the application to even get you in the door for an interview.
For gods sake, during the interview do the following:
1. Wear a suit, if you dont own a nice one, go get a tailor made one for 3-500$.
2. Be ready to answer technical questions about your MA program
3. Be ready to demonstrate how the teaching you have done in the past will help you teach uni students. |
