I just love the ones that start with, "My dream is to teach English in Korea".
I still remember when my first grade teacher asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up. I said, "My dream is to teach English in Korea, and if that does not work out, my second dream is to be a test subject for shark repellents." |
I should have gone with my second dream.

The problem with teaching drills through music like this is, it can be very memorable but the pronunciation can get adversely affected E.g. they will leave the class thinking we say 'what's your fave-or-rite subject'? with three syllables on the word favourite and stress on 'what's', 'your' and 'fave' instead of just 'what's' and 'fave'.
Weren't you thinking about becoming a musician on a boat at one point WT? Not much difference to what this guy's doing I'd have thought. Getting the audience involved and all that. |

Or perhaps that is WT....and looking to expand his viewership. |

Not even going to bother laughing at this because I feel some sort of deep sympathy to everyone involved in that video. |

A couple of months ago I was listening to a webinar about EPIK budget cuts. The lady who set it up was getting lots of comments and questions about how it would affect their schools and if it was worth applying to EPIK at all (at least until a new government is elected in Korea).
Then she got this message from an American student who wanted to know what courses she needed to take at university in order to be selected for EPIK. Getting into EPIK and living in Korea was her greatest dream.
"How old are you?" asked the person who had set up the webinar.
"I'm in middle school!" was the reply. |

K-pop fan?
I have a friend who has managed a CD store for well over a decade. He said prior to Gangnam style he had never once had an inquiry about kpop, but since then about 2-3 times a month customers come in asking if the store carries kpop music. Psy really put Korea on the map big time apparently. |

It looks like a public school teaching demonstration that EPIK/GEPIK wants from their NETs. It should be dynamic, a horse and pony show. Be darned if any learning takes place. |

1. World Traveler -The guy just might be living HIS dream. He looks happy to me. Why judge?
2. John ML - It's just as well. Expected something like that from you.
3. Adam - Let me help you with the words...(see below)
4. Tophatcat - How were able to measure that learning did not take place?
Singing and chanting research has shown singing and chanting are effective in ELT for a variety of reasons. One of them is that learners who might be reticent about speaking English feel more comfortable singing because it's something they do in L1. Repetition helps with retention. Those who are shy about speaking aloud feel more comfortable in the group chant/sing and have a chance to produce language. Lowering the affective filter is always good, no?
The hand gestures assigned to the target lexis has also been shown to aid in both comprehension and retention.
Singing and chanting is fun. At least for these learners. You can see they are fully engaged. Everyone is one their feet and participating. Why would you have no words for an activity that every learner in a classroom is engaged in? Perhaps you've never been able to engage your learners to this extent and it seems alien to you?
The lesson combined systems and skills (grammar + lexis) - though from the short clip its hard to tell which was the main objective and which was the secondary. Either way, they got controlled practice of structure and lexis.
The instructor begins to provide feedback to one of his learners just before the video cut off at the end.
The activity had a clear aim, the learners were engaged, and the instructor provided feedback.
Just because you guys are too cool for school doesn't mean that the instructor in the video has anything to be embarrassed about. |

Few would doubt that the instructor in the video himself could have provided a better defense than this.
Cough cough.

OK. I'll take back what I said. I'm sure they learned something.
What's your favorite Fuzzy, (whistling to myself) |

Well what do you think they learned?
What do you think the aim of the activity was?
Given that we only saw one stage of a whole lesson, where in the lesson do you think this stage took place?
Which key linguistic features would the learners need to be able to complete the activity successfully?
Are there any features of speech that you saw in the video that might provide learning opportunities?
How many learners did you see sitting down looking at their phones? Given that you are clearly much more professional than the instructor in the video and are above the use of music in the classroom, what do you do to gain that level of learner engagement?
John ML, Adam Corolla, World Traveler - feel free to take a shot, too. |

It wasn't me. I don't have that kind of energy. But I wish I could get my learners that engaged. 😎 |
