|
|
Hey,
I used to teach English to adults back home so I applied to Wall Street English. During the interview it was explained to me that they do not provide accommodation nor do they provide a housing allowance. Naturally I then asked how much I can expect to earn and the guy told me 2.3 plus 100,000 meal allowance and an extra 150,000 if I do split shifts. That adds up to 2.55 a month. I looked on CL how much rent is in Seoul and it would seem 90% of apartments go for 500,000+ a month. Which would mean that my actual salary is closer to 2 mil a month before taxes and other deductions.
I find it difficult to believe that a hagwon really pay such a crappy salary. Does anyone here work for them? How much do you earn if you do? Do they pay overtime for the Saturdays you are expected to work every three weeks?
Thanx in advance |

8 hours a day plus 1 Saturday (from 10-4) every 3 weeks. He didn't mention anything about Saturdays being OT so I am not sure if you get paid more for them. |

I meant contact hours, I assume they don't want you to teach for 8 hours a day |

I've heard WSI can be a good bet if they give you a morning or evening slot and allow you to do extra work at other places in the morning/evening. People on here have said that was a good deal in the past. If they are now offering 6 contact hours a day on a split shift for 2 mil a month, it's no longer a good deal. |

I'm curious if they changed their pay in the past few years. I remember it having a small stipend for working there. I could be totally wrong though. It sounds like a pretty bad position to be honest. You get long hours for less compensation. This underscores how the job market is really bad now. What are you going to do for key money?
WSI Korea used to be considered good because of location (Seoul), you teach adults not children, the lesson plans are already done for you, you could also expect to be paid on time. They have chains in many other countries so don't mix them up.

They do provide the key money but that is it. No monthly housing allowance. And yeah I know they have branches all over the world. |

Sounds like a horrible deal. six teaching hours a day plus a Saturday for 2.3 without housing? so around 1.9 before deductions if housing is 500,00+ a month. |

Exactly. I mean they now told me if I do not need them to provide me with the key money then I can get an extra 100,000 a month toward housing. Again, they being ridiculously cheap. What the hell am I gonna do with 100,000? |

Look at the other schools that teach adults. I've never heard of any school not offering a housing allowance or housing. If you are willing to work splits there are tons of schools out there. |

Tell them to give you 500,000 won a month housing allowance in Seoul or you walk. Give them the finger; there's other employers to work for. I'm surprised they would do that. They're a fairly large company in many countries. They seem to get decent enough reviews in China - IE paying enough for housing. I think? |

Yeah I just told them that I am not interested. Didn't even bother with the second and final round interview. And I made pretty clear that it is because they give the worst remuneration package I have come across in Korea so far. |
