Who can help me out? I need to be able to convert a music CD to a wma format. Are there any freeware programs out there that do that?
Could I possibly have it already and don't know it?
I was at work playing with Windows Movie Maker and wanted to put some music on my 'project'...
Thanks.. |

I just bought a new CD (Gomez)- yes, I paid for it, those guys deserve my money- and it turns out that EMI is copy protecting ALL of its releases from now on. Even though I paid for it I couldn't load it on my MP player.
Well, screw that, I paid for the songs and I'll play them in the format I choose!
Having got that off my chest, I recently discovered http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/
Cdex will do what you are looking for, Scarneck- convert cd music files (copy protected or not) to WMA and MP3.
Easy to use but check out all the options to ensure an error-free rip. I read on a sourceforge forum that it works better if you rip from the R/W drive rather than the regular CD drive (no idea if this is true or not). |

Victory!
Defeat is for the other team!
I had been looking for such a program after I couldn't use CD editing software to copy the last CD and a half remaining to be copied to my music server. Though that program is much easier than the way I was doing it. |

Hey.
I have downloaded that site and have it on my computer now. But, which of the menus allows you to change it to MP3 files? |

If you want to convert to WMA, try Microsoft Plus. Only downside is that it comes bundled with a lot of junk that you likely won't want.

WMA = Windows Media Audio
I'm not sure if you can play this format on an MP3 player but I do know that lots of portable and personal CD players are compatible to both formats these days. The advantage to WMA is that it compresses the file size a lot more than MP3 and retains the quality. I changed 10gb of music into less than 7gb when I converted my MP3's. However, you have to think about whether this is good for you. If you are burning discs or using an MP3 player, you should check out which file formats are compatible with your device. If you are mainly using your computer to listen to those files and you are on a Windows platform, you should have little reason not to convert to WMA, in my opinion.
I hope this helps. |
