Thanks for the reply!

Oh well, I guess that answers my question concerning it being a decent place to work.

Maybe, maybe not! They're pretty well set in the coin department, and she will probably be taking a career break or retiring early. He just wants something to do and has always loved teaching. Early in his career he as an ESL guy.

I have been working in university departments (not language centres) for 10 years. I am also the hiring committee who makes the final decisions regarding the recruitment and hiring of new foreign faculty in my department. The difference in the quality of the applicants has been noticeably better since the requirements had become more stringent.

A few years ago, we had 1 opening and over 700 applied for the position.

Requirements were a graduate degree and 2 years FULL TIME university teaching experience.

Approx 1/3 of the CV's had fraudulent credentials (fake scans, mixed dates and some degrees had spelling errors). 1/3! I was stunned.

Anyone who graduated with a Korean degree was binned. I know the quality of education here and it's sorely lacking on many levels.

Of ALL the applicants, 4 (yes 4) had matched the educational requirements (degree in hand, verified working experience). My university flew me to Canada to personally interview one candidate in his kitchen which took a few hours.

He completed his first contract and is still here. Yet our 'working conditions' are somewhat 'old school' (9hrs a week lecturing, 12 week holidays in summer & winter). These 'lowering' of working conditions happen when universities try to hogwonize and hire far too many faculty.

If you want to enjoy your working experience, try working for a university that is smaller. I think you'll find that there are quite a few gems out there if you are lucky enough to apply at the right time and actually meet the hiring requirements.
This. Well put. I second the assessment of TheMeerkatLover regarding hiring process for university.

Nothing. Then silently, with a smile like The Grinch or Cheshire Cat on your face, wait for the question to disappear like the head on your freshly poured beer. Alternatively, to rid yourself of a pesky question which deserves no answer, as it is nosey to ask, and nobody's business to know, answer with absurdly high or low figures, just to spark nonsensical discussion and debate purely for the sake of amusing entertainment. At the end of the back and forth, though, remember to say "just kidding" and "had you going there!" Then order another round amid the laughs.

I guess it's so easy to get into this thing of wanting to verbally clobbering each other? Take it easy, fellows.

Say what? Perhaps you quoted the wrong posters?

But in the spirit of the hiring university hiring season and all, and a slight prejudice for grammar structure...
want to + basic verb (no 'ing')
Cheers

15 ads for uni positions have been placed in the past 30 days: right on schedule.
That was posted on Oct. 29. Update: 17 for November, and 7 for December so far. Total: just over 3 dozen new, non-repeating ads on Dave's.

Below is brief data which can be useful for GENO123 to continue disparaging the famed programs:

S = 12 hours 15 weeks 2.972/month 35/hr over -398/mo rent (or +600/mo housing allowance)
K = 15 hours 16 weeks 3.714/month 32/hr over -570/mo rent (or none)
Y = 12 hours 16 weeks 2.833/month 30/hr over -640/mo rent (or none)

I think there are so many other factors besides money that ought to be considered. Contact hours doesnt tell one anything. Plus then there is the question of severence or not. I really dont understand why people feel the need to inflate numbers.
