I have got several written references from past employers including a reference from 2014, when I was last in Korea. These reference letters follow EPIK guidelines.
Reach to Teach said my references weren't good enough, for EPIK. I needed one from this year and a new set of references from past employers. Unfortunately the employer from 2015 refuses to give written references.
Is Reach to Teach correct about needing new references? Or are they being control freaks? They do seem that way to me. I was aware that for SMOE I would need 2 new references from 2015. But otherwise I don't know.
What have your experiences been with written references, for public schools or hagwons?

I don't know that they aren't good enough for EPIK, just sounds like they weren't written recently enough.

I always get new letters from old references...though I try to keep copies of their letters (in pdf or preferably word format) so that if I ever need another letter from them in the future, they can just modify the document (like the date) and then mail me or the recruiter an updated copy.

But I am not in Korea right now! Why should I have to provide new references from the same people? Especially when you consider how rigorous and detailed the EPIK application form is already, and all the paperwork needed for the E-2 visa. I do get the impression that the Dictator's Daughter is inimical to ESL in general and is trying to end the practice of hiring foreigners to teach English. It's not just the references, it's the way that every year EPIK demands more and more.

? Neither was I when I applied for EPIK, but I still got letters from my previous (Korean) employers from when I was last in Korea. You’re preaching to the choir if you’re telling me it’s a hassle, if not a ridiculous formality. I’m just letting you know what I do to save time and effort for both you and those writing your letters.

Still, though…those letters do have a shelf life. I wouldn’t necessarily assume that someone who wrote me a letter two years ago would still have me fresh in their minds if a prospective employer decided to call them out of the blue regarding a letter they’d written two years prior. Just saying…

Well, true… though, there are other places/countries to work. I’m considering that, myself.

I think, though, after you jump through the hoops (for EPIK or wherever) and get into the country, things won’t be as difficult (as I’m sure you’d guess). Because, yeah, I remember it being a hassle getting all those docs and thinking it wasn’t going to be worth it. But once I was in country…all I had to do was transfer documents if I didn’t/couldn’t stay at the same school.

Anyway, hope everything works out for you.
