I happened to meet a hagwun boss and he said many things about how he can no longer find good white female teachers who want to teach in Korea. He was a staunch racist like a Neo-Nazi and he hates people with dark skins.
What do you guys think about this? Is the ESL scene in Korea doomed?
I was an Arabic teacher at a chaebol until last week. And I can say that the demand for Arabic is doomed here. |

Wow! Just Wow...he wants a female so he is a neo-nazi? Wow! Also, what has teaching Arabic to do with ESL? There is a difference between bowing to market pressure (parent's wishes due to a biassed media) and being a "Neo-nazi". Sriously dude, that is a bit of a leap. The guy is in it for the money, so watever makes the most money, will be his course of action. Even if that action is questionable. Now, if the market was calling for dark skin (as you put it) and he actively refured to hire such people, that would be a better case for him being a "neo-nazi". |

I forgot to tell that he said bad things about my Arab heritage and my dark-toned skin. He literally freaked out how I was a practicing Muslim. I'm from a rare Shia Fiver sector who is persecuted like those Ahmadi Sunnis. But it's my first time hearing that the whole ESL market here is geared towards gender and skin discrimination.
This kind of ESL education market is doomed to fail on how I see it.
But is it a good time to bail out from Korea to another country? My half-Korean son would experience so much discrimination in Korea, so I think it's better off to go somewhere else with less discrimination. |

He might be a racist he might not, but if he was it's likely he would blame his prejudice in hiring on the parents anyway. It's likely Korean mums think females make better Young Learner teachers and a North American accent is more desirable than other types (not that their little brats are likely to pick up any accent apart from a Korean one by going to a hagwan)
A few years ago guys like him and mums couldn't be so picky about the age, colour and gender of their teachers, so maybe it's a sign the market is veering more in favour of supply than demand. Maybe young, white presentable NA females are more aware of their market value these days and are not going for the 2.1 mil a month jobs he's offering.
Your comment about ESL in Korea being doomed doesn't logically follow on from one hagwan owner having problems hiring. Maybe it's doomed for that hagwan owner if he and his customers continue to be so picky but if all hagwan owners are having problems hiring, that can only lead to higher wages for ESL teachers in the long run.
As I mentioned before I've never heard of a single Korean adult learning Arabic in my ten years here so my personal experience is that there's never been that much demand. In the UK, it's fifth on the list of languages in demand by employers after French Spanish, German and Mandarin but I think it'd be lower down here. |

ESL in Korea is screwed yeah but for absolutely none of the reasons you listed. Asians were always racist and white skin was always preferred, you can't be just noticing this now. Just realize you're gonna get more racism in vietnam/China and the like - Korea is ok by comparison. Just the way things are. |

That's because learning Arabic is only reserved for hot shot office workers in Korean construction companies who need to work in the Middle East for 3-5 years. I know the schtick. |

Nope, sorry. You must be young and blond and on your high horse.
The Chinese and South Asians are very accepting. Plus, I never get the "Dwaejji" comments in China as I did in S. Korea.
Chinese wouldn't bat an eye at the OP and his Korean wife could blend in. |

You're far, far off the mark. I ain't blonde, I ain't American, and I ain't that young. The Chinese are the most racist people against non whites in all of asia quite simply put because white skin is more important to them than any other culture. If you aren't white, even if they don't pay attention to you they will be nice to you for your money but talk behind your back. Some comments I have from my time in China.
1) Recruiter: "What color are you?" Me: "Why?", "We hire white 10,000 month, black man 6000". They had American black men working for as low as 5,000 RMB
2) The Chinese even the more conservative ones don't like dark skin and several of them have told me they think it's "dirty to touch". If only they knew how dirty some white people are.
3) If you are colored they aren't going to say it to your face, get a white friend to ask be prepared to see the difference in opinion.
4) I know very few Indians/middle eastern/black people who can date many Chinese females whereas every ugly white dude can get literally any girl even old guys who are poor...
5) If you are a tourist they won't say shit cause they want your cash.
6) They are extremely spiteful and wary of Arabics because of western influence in media and what's going in xinjiang and the like. In the words of one of my Chinese friends "They are scary". Ridiculous but true.
7) I've seen kids get colored teachers fired.
I could go on forever but I can't be bothered, basically Arabic is slightly above being dark black and considerably below being oriental (in China). Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it isn't there. There is a caste system based on wealth, skin color and height and nobody wants to be or have a dark partner. I have never meant a Chinese person yet born in the mainland who doesn't give a damn about skin color, often to obsessive lengths (carrying umbrellas for shade/bleaching products).
... and before you ask, no I am not extremely tall. |
