Has anyone worked with ASK NOW-ETO? I'm currently talking to Brant Kim. Seems like a cool dude so far. I was thrown off by him saying that not all the schools on his network will offer pension, which is kind of a deal breaker for me. I'm not here to play around but legitimately want to get some teaching experience while saving up as much as I can for my next step. I just don't want to get cheated. I only found one bad review on the company for his partner, Jason, from 8 years ago: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?p=1662175
Also, any input on this hagwon: Gyeyang Avalon in Gyesan-dong, would be much appreciated too. Thanks! |

Some background on me: I've visited Seoul for the first time in November 2015 and fell in love with the whole atmosphere, so much that I wanted to teach English in Seoul. I'm not here to play around but legitimately want to gain some teaching experience while saving as much money as I can (and not get cheated out of any). I'm set to go teach English in Mongolia for the Peace Corps this summer but want to commit my time in Korea instead.
I'm currently working with Brant Kim from ASK NOW-ETO. He told me to get all my visa documents prepared and to contact him when they're ready so we can start the application process. However, he told me that half of the schools on his network won't provide pension. I'm aware that Hagwons are exempted from the National Pension Scheme but this is a deal breaker for me. As I said, if I can collect on that, I'd rather have it as saving is one of my goals.
Does anyone have any input on ASK NOW-ETO or Brant Kim? Or personally recommend a recruiter? I believe my safest bet is to go through personal references as the internet is packed with bad reviews and not any good ones. I know the recruiter isn't that important as I will be working with the Hagwons in the end. But IMO, a reputable recruiter = a reputable network of schools. Or if anyone has any info on how I can directly apply to a school without going through a recruiter, that'd be great too. I'm looking for gigs in or near Seoul.
Thank you everyone! |
No, they're not. He's lying to you. Hold out for a job that does things legally. As a female you have a lot of leverage, so you can. (Females are strongly preferred over males.) |

Thanks World Traveler for your input! I'm trying to hold out but how do I find the gigs to hold onto in the first place? I'm just kind of stuck in terms of trying to get my foot in the door. I joined this facebook group page: teaching jobs in seoul, and reached out to 15 postings with no responses back :/
I thought maybe he wasn't being entirely truthful (got to question everything thrown at me) too so I did a search on the internet about the NPS and found this: http://english.nps.or.kr/jsppage/english/scheme/scheme_01.jsp
This section states: "(2) Who is excluded from national pension scheme coverage?
Those falling under any of the following categories are excluded from national pension coverage, even if they satisfy the general criteria for coverage:
Government employees, military personnel, private school teachers, specially designated employees working for post offices (they are covered under separate pension plans) and national pension beneficiaries aged between 55 and 59, such as early or old-age pensioners."
Please correct me if I misunderstood.

Hagwons are not private schools, they are educational academies. |

I'm surprised that Brant is still in business. Jason sold off his half of the biz years ago to Brant & Brant's dad, and then started opening restaurant/bars. Brant got me my first job in Korea, and it was as shady a job as they come. I don't blame him, I blame myself.
The parts I was not real pleased about was the "service after the sale." Once he placed me, he forgot how to reply to e-mails. So I didn't know what was happening with my flight to the Korea until hours prior to it taking off. Once I got to the Korea, some random dude put me on a bus to my new city and then I was on my own. The school didn't know I was coming at that time, so I got off the bus in the middle of the Korea with no idea where I was or what to do. Fun times, all courtesy of ASK-NOW!
They probably don't put stories like this on their website. |
