If North Korea collapses, South Korea will not open its borders and let people wander down. The Chinese will likely just keep buy Norks land around their border and make it essentially Chinese. They may then take over the country a la Tibet.

The Chinese are not dumb. They would have a very nationalistic, ethnocentric, and hostile 22 million Koreas on their border. If you think South Korea is bad with their ethinic pride, North Korea has had absolutely no immigrants, or foreigners, living there in the last 60 years. There is a reason they are keeping Kim Jong-Nam around. If things go south, and they aren't satisfied with SK/US negotiations, they are going to put big brother Jong-Nam onto NK's throne.

Perhaps later, when they're satisfied with whatever they negotiate with SK/US they will let the south Koreans to takeover. Which most likely requies American troops to stay south of the DMZ, or outright leave, and an understanding that SK isn't hostile to Chinese foreign policy in the region.

If the new anti-missile deal between South Korea and the US goes through, it might make the pre-emptive strike strategy more attractive for any suicidal/homicidal NK leaders who might opt to go out with a bang before it's installed... Such a missile defense system is also opposed by China, who sees it as lessening their deterrent power. And, for what it's worth, Russia has just called NK's latest strike threats "totally unacceptable" ...

This article spells out how the current situation differs from past crises, and Seoul is now leading the charge (i.e. harsher sanctions) in what one analyst has called "a campaign of strategic strangulation" to bring down the NK regime. A prominent Chinese diplomat in charge of North Korean relations has also commented that the North has "signed its own death warrant"...

Seoul seems to be overlooking one important thing......

......The fact that CHINA, not South Korea, makes up 90% of North Korea's trade, and the upper echelons of the North Korean regime don't bank with South Korean banks. What's more, the South already cut off what little trade they had with North Korea, to a MUCH greater detriment to itself than North Korea.

The world needs to rethink the North Korea problem.

As far as Seoul leading the charge, the witch of the Blue House is stirring up McCarthyist cold-war feelings for pre-election drama.

Well, these articles suggest that North Korea is as defiant and calculated as ever - and its regime might manage to survive yet again ...

I am curious how you bridged that, especially when McCarthy was not really proven wrong...only gagged.
