I think I may have misremembered something. His French Canadian friend was the one who was deported and later committed suicide:

Quote:
I had an acquaintance here who was from Quebec, mother tongue French and went to a French university. His degree and transcripts were written in English. His English was perfect. Eminently more understandable than any British, Aussie, Kiwi or South African I have ever met (no offence - just sayin')

Anyway, someone found out and ratted him out. What a despicable act. A call was made, immi found out, he was fired and deported.

He's dead now, he hung himself. That was what started my dear late friend Yu_Bumsuk's tumble. They were very close friends here in Korea.

This place can get to you and sometimes you can't see it coming.

I knew YBS rather well. When I see rumors flying it hits me a little emotionally. That's my issue.

I thought you were being snarky (which, to be fair, is a safe bet on this forum). My apologies. Sorry about your friend.

I remember him well from years on Dave's and Waygook.org. Strange timing of this news, if true: I was just reading something of his here.

I received a private message from Harpeau, passing on the following from another friend of YBS's (called Derek). He said:

Quote:
Last I talked to him was a year ago, chuseok. We usually got together every year at that time, when he came to Seoul, but he didn't contact me this past year. I would very much like to hear what happened to Stephen, but cannot write on Dave's. I have no id there

You can mention that his good friend was Cruisemonkey on Dave's, but I only met him once.

I can only assume Cruisemonkey is the gentleman who took his own life, mentioned above by Ghostrider. I never met Cruisemonkey, but YBS mentioned him a lot and always in a good way - they were good friends. Cruisemonkey's Dave's profile

Sad situation.

i really don't think it's cruisemonkey. there is a guy on that other ESL site who posts under that name. his profile says he last logged in on 1 April 2016, so a few days ago.

according to his posts on that other site, he's teaching at a uni in China and has been for the last 5 or 6 years.

PM sent. And exactly how long do you plan on keeping this cryptic thread going if nobody on here can actually confirm his death?

Hopefully someone will show up with an explanation as to what happened. Doesn't look like it, though. I suspect the only people who know are family members. So it shall remain a mystery.

Oldtimer~ PM sent.

He has been confirmed dead, I am sad to say.

One thought would be to have a memorial/wake/toast to his memory.

Thank you once again, Harpeau. The cause of death remains unknown, but it is now all but certain that YBS has indeed passed away.

I don't understand. If you can somehow confirm that Stephen (I am using his real name out of respect) has already passed away with 100% certainty, then what is preventing you from getting the how/why/when/where?

This just in from his school, to my friend:

"Dear _____

I can confirm that Stephen's death was ruled as sudden death, not suicide, due to cardiac factors.
I am unable to provide details of Stephens family to you but will pass on your email address to them.

Regards

Mary Nixon

Principal
"

I, myself want to offer my condolences to those that new him.
