This coming August I am hoping to be on my way to teaching English in South Korea. I have a bachelor's degree in Art Education, with 4 years of experience as a teacher and a teaching license. I know I haven't been teaching English but I have heard that isn't required. I have completed my TEFL course just in case. I will be bringing a dependent. My husband will be joining me and part of the draw of coming would be that he could focus on his online college degree. I have started the process of working with Korvia through possibly the EPIK program. I would like to work with multiple recruiters and look at several different options and possibly with hagwons as long as they are reputable. Does anyone know of a good recruiter who can help me find a job with a dependent?

Find job.
Get ARC.
Bring dependent - no issue with employer since the dependent is sponsored by you and on an F3.

Alternatively:
Get job
Get visa,
Fly over with dependent (who will be on a tourist entry).
Get ARC.
Change status of dependent.
Again, no issue with employer.

Alternatively:
Try to find job with visa sponsorship assisted by employer.
Keep trying. Keep trying.
Keep trying. Keep trying.
Keep trying. Keep trying.
Keep trying. Keep trying.
Keep trying. Keep trying.

You get the picture.

What Tom said, with the addition of:

There is no good recruiter, or bad recruiter. Use all of them. Trust none of them.

You should try some recruiters like "triexecutive". Also never have full trust that might be they able to give you a perfect job that you want unless you prove yourself for worthy for that.

I talked and emailed to some recruiters, many of them said that the ESL industry is bad and so does the recruiting business.

Some get very upset when they realize one is using multiple agencies and a persona of offense becomes them. The butt-hurt comes out. Yet, they see no problem working with multiple teaching candidates to fill one slot...(and rightfully so).

It would be amazing to see what would happen if schools simply started recruiting teachers on their own. But, seeing as how the Korean recruiting mafia owns that branch of the market, it is unlikely that would happen.

Yeah it is bad. Just look on Dave's job board. Before there would be 20 recruiters per day posting jobs. Now it is 5-8 per day.

Even more, two or three supposedly different companies are owned by the same person, or group of people.

And, yes...they still have their little blacklist. I had a recruiter accidentally tell me about it...then immediately retracted what he said and used the smog screen of "miscommunication".

There ARE a couple of decent people in the business though...you just have to figure out who they are, after trial and error.

With that said, OP, don't waste your time in Korea. Credentials and experience are simply not valued, in general. You can simply show up in Thailand, pound the pavement for a week or two, having your pick of what job you wish to accept, for a salary equal to bottom of what you would make in Korea and life wonderfully.

IF you still wish to teach in Korea, it would behoove you to maintain your professional integrity and accept nothing less than the equivalent of $2300 (US) a month, AFTER all legal deductions.

Do yourself (and the rest of prospective teachers) a favor. Do not allow yourself to get low-balled in Korea.

True Blue, I'm going to have to disagree about Thailand. I also thought I'd be living wonderfully here, and now I'm considering returning to Korea. Teaching in Thailand is not as great as it sounds. The first part, about how you can land a job easily, is true. But I am paid $1100/month and a lot of people are being paid $900 a month here. While my rent is only $150/month, there's just not enough left over to have any kind of life, even in Thailand where things are cheaper. I can't imagine Korea paying anyone $1100 for working 36 hours a week (about 20-25 being teaching hours). The food and the weather are much better here, and the people seem a lot more open and friendlier but...still...I think Thailand is better for vacation. I wish someone had warned me.

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread. I'm also interested to find out which hagwon recruiters are the best because I want to work in a hagwon if I go back to Korea.

Fair enough. I can see your point(s) and on the surface, they are true. However, consider the fact that you can have two jobs or teach privates without the fear of being deported, in Thailand. If you can put on a good, solid demo lesson, obtaining a salary of 40-45k baht in Bangkok is definitely not out of question (being at the right place at the right time, helps as well). Basically, if you want more money, you can work more without much hassle.

In Korea...that is a different story.

To each their own and I do agree that each side of the line will have its own challenges.

TrueBlue - That's what I've heard. There is definitely a difference in how easy it is to do that. I still haven't risked it though; also since I already work 36 hours I'm eager to move instead of putting in more hours just to stay here. Smile I agree with you though that if one could make enough money, they would definitely live better in Thailand than in Korea.
