I think many would happy with almost any university job in Seoul, if you have experience, try to avoid SNU. Proudest people I have ever met and the management is horrible.

Several universities have been breaking the law openingly in recent years. I can name several universities that have been successfully sued... Sejong lost at least two big court cases... Konkuk lost... SNU lost big. HUFS could have been sued but the employees figured the loss wasnt significant enough.

SNU has a nice campus and decent housing... thats it. If you have a choice, go somewhere else.

I am sure SNU is horrible but the conditions and treatment at Korean universities are usually more or less the same.

Then again, it's in Seoul, the housing isn't bad, you'll get paid on time, and you'll get paid summer and winter breaks to cushion that aweful 12 hour/week sched they impose lol...

Worse jobs out there.

Well I guess you could try to do extra work outside the school (when you have time. and now IF you have time )

Ah, this was an ELI job, not a departmental job. I had a buddy who took an ELI job over a departmental job. The breaks aren't at semesters, but at end of program blocks. He said the coin was actually better than the departmental job.

Never a problem getting paid, and overtime plus other earning opportunities often provided in-house (e.g. editing work).

Can you support a family on 3-4 million a month? Lots of Koreans do, so I suppose it is doable. This type of ESL job isn't meant to provide an income large enough for a single breadwinner to provide for a family, though.

At other universities, they don't have term limits, and annual salary increases are provided (some are earned, some are automatic, depeneding on the university). I know a bunch of people in such positions quite successfully providing for their families (wife plus a kid or two).

Nobody going into ESL realistically thinks, or should think, they're going to retire a multi-millionaire. Heck, nobody who goes into teaching of ANY kind should think that lol....

I think the take home ( using hogwon measures would be about 2.5. But that universities dont permit outsude work is what makes those sorts of jobs toxic.

They are just not particulary good jobs. I would say just a out any unionized korean gets a better deal . plus they have much more job security and other benefits and advantages

One cant support a family or pay back loans on 2.7/ 2.8 take home ( hogwon scale). Not really.

And since household debt in korea is at an all time high lower middle class salaries ( if that) dont get the job done so well either.

Not looking to take a cruise around the world.

As i said try asking a Korean professor who tells you that you cant work somewhere else , if they could get by on 2.5 ~ 2.8.M .See what they say.
