So I've recently posted up my resume on ESLcafe and have gotten several emails from recruiters from Korea. A few of them have asked me to send them a copy of my college diploma and a criminal background report. I have my diploma but it's not apostilled and I don't have a criminal background report. I figured I would get these documents once I have decided to accept a job and signed the contract.

Is it normal for recruiters to ask for these things before even discussing the job and signing the contract?
Should I obtain these things before applying for jobs or should I do it after accepting a job offer and signing the contract?'

Sorry, I am a complete newbie to teaching abroad and it's my first time so hopefully this doesn't count as a stupid question.

Trichinosis is a parasitic disease caused by roundworms. Infection may occur without symptoms, and intestinal invasion can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain or vomiting. As with any disease, treatment will be most accurately targeted if preceded by proper diagnosis. Otherwise, if a doctor is not consulted, maybe the patient just thinks a dose of imodium may suffice. Likewise with TEFL recruiting. A review of documentation is an excellent insight into candidate quality, so typically experienced recruiters will seek enlightenment through a process known as confirmation as soon as possible. Without this, all foreign candidates seem equally qualified in appearance, when in fact they are just asymptomatic, and no hint of the toubles to follow may be found until the last minute. Have your papers in order as if you are ready to get on an airplane tomorrow if you wish to get hired easily. Efficiency never goes out of fashion in any industry. Be ready or be lucky. Good luck.

Thanks for your stylish response haha Laughing So before I start applying for TEFL jobs, I should start applying for my visa and getting my CBC? Don't you need to be offered a job in Korea in order to be eligible to apply for the visa?

Yes. Now you get it. Have that app filled out, ready to fill in the name of the eventual institution lucky enough to get you on staff, and have CBC in hand. Remember that those who already have jobs with visas and are looking at and apply for the same jobs you are looking at or being offered are in line ahead of you, so do everything you can to move up the queue. Any stumble on their part will help you, and likewise on your part for them. Swim hard upstream against the current, little salmon! If you can avoid the bears, then you will get to spawn, and subsequently die. Welcome to the TEFL cycle of life. Be forewarned (by reading the threads!) that the ROK is demographically in terminal decline.
