	  | Television journalist Morley Safer, who made his reputation as a Vietnam War correspondent for CBS and then became a mainstay on the network's "60 Minutes" show for 46 years, died at age 84 on Thursday, a few days after his retirement, the network announced.

Safer, who retired in what CBS described as declining health, died at his home in Manhattan.

I watched a lot of his stuff on 60 Minutes over the years, but nothing memorable is really coming to mind; the episodes all kind of morph together in my head. I seem to recall that he focussed more on celebrity interviews and human-interest stories.

He had a cameo, as himself, in the movie Morning Glory a few years back. He was only on for a few seconds, and his idenity wasn't announced, but there was no mistaking him for anyone else.

				| They referenced him once on the Golden Girls. Blanche said she could have had an affair with a journalist famous for his work on 60 Minutes. Sophia said, "I bet it's Morley Safer." I hadn't heard of him and the way she pronounced it I thought she said Molly Safer, and I was surprised to hear about a man named Molly. My mother was in the room and she said it was Morley.
 Strange anecdote I know.

I'm glad to see On the other hand is back as the forum's obituary. Sometimes other posters beat him to it.
