I have a signed a contract for a job starting June 1st.
Currently in England and still awaiting my Criminal Check returning. Im hoping to get this back 27th - 31st.
BUT my plan is to basically go to Korea the day without my paperwork, which will be still getting checked apostilled etc and start the job asap. Then when it is ready I get the paperwork mailed to me courtesy of my lovely parents and do the visa run etc.
If you were me would you wait and tell the school one more week, get the paperwork and fly and risk the school being super pissed
or
Fly asap, start the job and get the paperwork mailed over a week later.
Ive worked in Korea four years and never had visa issues so this is stressful for me. Im advised by a few friends in Korea that working without a visa should be fine for a week but.......im worried
What would you do? |

Just be aware that most schools will pay for the flight or the visa run but not both. Which one are you prepared to pay for out of your pocket?
IF you are not prepared to dig into your pocket then notify the school of the delay so they can sub the class.
If you are prepared to dig into your pocket then fly at your convenience.

It's your call, either way you're going to be working illegally for a couple of weeks. You need to allow 2+ weeks to get your documents apostilled, posted to Korea, and then sent to Immi for your VIN before you can do the visa run.
You also run the risk of not being allowed on your flight to Korea without a visa if you don't have an outbound ticket - this happened to my boyfriend, he was in Dubai, they stopped him as he went to board the plane and wouldn't let him on to the flight to Korea as he had no proof of departure - luckily he was able to book a fully refundable ticket from Korea back to Dubai, but he almost missed the flight and it was pretty stressful.
Obviously the school knows you won't have your visa in time for 1st June, as they haven't sent off for your VIN yet, so they're prepared to have you working illegally, which would worry me a lot - you have absolutely no comeback if they screw you over whilst working illegally. Some hagwons have been known to let people work illegally for prolonged periods and then not pay them.
Personally I wouldn't risk it, and would ask them to wait until you can come over legally. If they refuse I'd look for another job. |

OP...it may be the better idea to have all your "ducks in a row".
The last thing you want are delays, especially at the worst time(s). |
