I do not think Korea is rewarding good singers as much as they are rewarding fine limbed comely lasses.

Look at classy 에일리 sing in Spanish with a huge rich sultry voice here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o98KleIhP2M

Then you see CL of 2ne1 sing in an average voice and rap in a vapid concert looking like a high class call girl with a rave style blond haired caucasian guy record spinner to give her street cred:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZOMenTwy90

CL would not even get past the first few rounds in Americas got talent. Her singing is above average but really nothing to rate being recorded. I think the only reason she got fame is because she is tall, beautiful, and no doubt hard working.

Don't get me wrong- I would still hang out with CL and let her buy me pizzas and Korean BBQ. But, she has an inferior singing skill set when you slap her against Aillee.

I don't think this is a surprise to anyone. There are a couple of Kpop stars who have some actual musical ability (there's a thread on way gook, though somewhat pathetically the fans of Kpop keep producing the same two examples of said musical ability over and over) but for the most part, they're hired for their faces, T and A. As far as songwriting is concerned, the producers are doing 99.9% of the work and the autotuner does the rest.

I thought it was the 1980s songwriters back in Europe doing all the work on the lyrics.

Anyway, as you stated, it's not their singing, per se, that they're hired for. It's "the whole package": looks, dancing, and vocals. Whichever of those three that happens to be trending at the moment is the one that the producers will concentrate on when creating their next so-called group.

Basically, it's not music; it's fashion.

I think it's because she's primarily a rapper. It's the lyrics that matter more than the singing. And, her looks didn't hurt her chances at all.

There also seem to be some sub-par "talent" back in the world.
"America's Got Talent" aside, celebrity used to imply that there was a reason to be known & recognized. So much for that.

CL is not considered beautiful in Korea. Also, she's a 'rapper', not a singer. Her primary appeal is to young girls who like the strength and confidence she projects, hence her title of 'Charismatic Leader'.

How do dudes spend this much time rubbing shoulders and other parts with Korea and Koreans and still not have any sense of Korean standards of beauty?

Has anything on Dave's ever suggested that a good chunk of the people on here have a clue about Koreans, how they really perceive the world, and what they're actually thinking?

High nose, small face, shaved jaw, double eyelid surgery, 's line', 'v line' and 'eye smile'. I've picked up that much in the last 10 years. Sorry Steelrails if this is not true and I've completely misunderstood how Koreans really perceive the world Wink

You've got it narrowed down to a perfect science.

I DONT WANT to sound rude or anything but WTF! How badly do these people copy American pop. Jesus stop calling this crap KPOP and starting calling what is; the Asian version of American pop. All of the songs and manes are in English and their music videos are identical to that of american ones.

Blasphemy! Kpop is unique only to Korea, and being propelled throughout the world on the Hallyu wave!

Sarcasm aside, have any of you actually seen CL? Sorry to say, but she is really ugly without the help of "movie magic." I think most Koreans don't think about beauty when they see CL, but that's also why she's appealing. She's popular without being gorgeous. The same goes for the group Mamamoo.
