Any tips for how to find an apartment in Seoul? I assume most use an agency, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated...
Also, what sort of place can one get for 900k/month with 15mil key money? My employer has said that Hongdae and Itaewon would be good places in terms of convenient transportation to work...

What area of Seoul do you want to live in? What you'll get for your money will vary hugely from area to area.
Really your best bet is to go to the area you want to live in and call in to a few different realtor's offices, tell them your budget and ask to see what they have to fit it. I don't live in Seoul, but that's how I found my apartmebt. |

| Sounds like you're working for the BC, that's the housing they offer. You can get a pretty decent two bed flat in a villa for that kind of money in Itaewon. Don't know about Hongdae. Don't make it obvious who you're working for as I've heard a lot of sub-par flats magically seem to cost 900k + 15 mil down when it gets out |

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the BC. Funny you should mention that about the price changes...when I spoke with the moving company there, they asked how much my budget was and I told them 2000 pounds, the BC's limit. The estimate came back at exactly 1998 pounds. Now, that's normally enough to move an apartment full of stuff across the globe, but I had told them that I needed to move 6 small boxes of books and used kitchen stuff...all told worth about $500. Hilarious.
The message I got from the BC's estate agent seemed slightly dubious, along the same lines. If I remember correctly, you once worked for the BC in Seoul-- were there any issues with their agents when you were there, in terms of thee kinds of shenanigans?
Whatever happens, I'll hit the bricks when I get there and find alternate estate agents to get a broader view of what's available. I've also found that in other countries when estate agents play the games they do, a curt 'I know that an $X apartment in X district should look like, so if you can't show me what I'm looking for, I'm sure it won't be too hard to find someone who will...' I'm guessing that works in Korea as well. |

It was all hearsay as when I moved to Seoul I took over a mate's flat and the next time I moved my Korean wife sorted it. Obviously if you can get a non BC employee Korean to help you out, that'd be the best way. |

1. Know which are interests you.
2. Get a bi-lingual friend to agree to help you.
3. Hit a bunch of real estate agencies in your target hood. Tell them the type of place you'd like, the approximate size you have in mind and your approximate budget.
4. Be prepared to see a lot of shite holes before you find something you like (or like enough). If you do see something you like that's within your budget, pull the trigger. If you wait, odds are it'll be gone by the time you've made up your mind. Agents here will try to get you into anything oif it means getting their commission.
5. If you have a K friend to help, you might be able to find something in the local paper so that you can avoid paying the fees. |

Get a Korean your trust to help you find a good real estate agent. You are at a disadvantage doing it yourself. I think it is stupid to do that. |

| You don't want one agent, you want to blanket as many of the agencies as possible in your target neighborhoods. Quite often, even realtors seperated by mere blocks can have different properties. Put in the time and walk around, or your apt to have to settle for something sub par. |

Craigslist Seoul is 99.9% on-line realtors, and their prices are usually well above market value. I literally laugh out loud when I see some of those listings. Who are the doorknobs that pay those prices? Well, we know it's not coming out of pocket, so it's almost always corporate or government money picking up the tab.
There's no getting around it. Go to the target neighborhood and hit up the local agencies. |
