We want to go over to Korea as a couple to teach together.

I have read conflicting information regarding the certification that will put us in good stead, as I know it's harder as a couple with regards to living in the same area etc.

I wanted to find out what we should do in terms of certification.

We both have English degrees, with honours in Media.

We're in South Africa if that makes a difference.

Should we do a TEFL or a TESOL? Anyone have recommendations who to do it with?

Thanks!

If you're looking to come over as a couple, and looking for a workplace where you can work together, you're more than likely looking at hagwon (institute) positions. In that case, you don't need any certifications other than the BA from one of the accepted country of origins.

If one of you wants to apply for a public school job, then you'll need a certification. TTompatz can tell you exactly what you need. I believe any TEFL cert will do, even an on-line version, as long as it is 120 hours. But that info might be outdated and perhaps you'll need one with some actual face-to-face classroom components. Someone here will let you know.

If you both want to work at the same public school and live together (HIGHLY unlikely unless you're married), then you'll both need the certs.

A lot of times, a good avenue for couples to explore is for one person to come over, get a job, and get settled in a place. THEN the other person gets their documentation together and comes over, crashes with the partner, and looks for a job nearby. Many places don't want to hire unmarried couples because of the potential problems involved.

Thanks for the answer. We were going to both do EPIK, but try get placed near each other. We don't need to be at the same school, but would want to live together somehow. I hope this is possible.

I have read that it is definitely a good idea to do a TEFL/TESOL with an in-class component instead of one of those super cheap online Groupon ones.

For EPIK you need a cert of 120 hours or more and at least 20 hours must have been done "in class".

... for Busan, 60 hours in class and 120 hour minimum.

TEFL, TESOL, TESL... it won't matter. They are essentially the same - basic English teaching qualifications.
TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
TESL - Teaching English as a Second Language
TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

.

Thanks! We've decided on this I think: MOD EDIT

Could you give it a brief glance and see if it looks decent?
