After five years in Korea, I'm thinking of getting my masters. I'm eyeing online M.Ed in TESOL programs. Any recommendations? (Cheaper is better.) Thanks. |

Sheffield Halam is one of the cheapest ones I've heard of. |

If you're in Seoul, I think you can do your MA at Dongkuk University. Supposed to be pretty painless and inexpensive. |

I don't know your future plans but be aware that a lot of places outside Korea (especially the Middle East) will not recognize an online MA. If that's not an issue for you then don't worry about it.
Good luck with your studies. |

Do they check then if it's an online MA or not? I know they check for Saudi as you have to get your uni to email in to the cultural bureau confirming your degrees but I don't know if UAE, Qatar and OMAn go as far as doing this. If they don't then don't bother telling them it's an online MA that's all. |

MOD EDIT I only brought it up in case the OP had ever thought about moving on from Korea.
FWIW, you MIGHT get away with not revealing the online nature of your MA, but you'd have to fudge your resume then as well. If you say you were working in Korea at the same time as you claim to have been in another country doing your MA on-site - it could be an issue. This could be further complicated if you are asked for employment certificates. |

Save your money.
The coursework for an M.Ed program isn't that onerous. Typically 24 credit hours over a year (often on weekends) followed by your thesis. Most M.Eds will only required you to do about 32-40 weekends of coursework followed by your thesis.
An on-line M.Ed (as compared to an on-line theoretical MA with no thesis or a masters with a thesis based on meta-data) is usually not well developed and lacks the practical components needed to be useful other than to say you have an Masters in something.
You want to do the research methodology and stats courses face to face with group work as you gain and build your skills to do your real research, write the thesis and do your publication. It WILL make a difference when it comes time for your proposal and thesis defenses.
The theory courses can be on-line, blended, flipped or any other combination.
There are some courses offered in Korean universities that offer options for working teachers. MATESOL, M.ED, MA Applied Linguistics....

Come on, people, let's not bother trying to recreate the wheel. Do your homework, then ask for input IF it hasn't already been covered. Spoiler alert: but it probably has! |

At the end of the day, the cheapest and easiest is Photoshop-U.
Won't get you far (no presentations, no thesis, no publications, no... etc. but it will look good on the wall in your hagwan.
It is cheap and easy.
But seriously, if you want to do a legitimate M.Ed then do the work. Easy doesn't come into it. There are plenty of affordable options in Asia (offered in English).
At the end of the day, you get out what you put in and a masters is NOT like your undergrad. It is not about the coursework and parties. It is about your IS and comprehensives or your research and thesis.
If you just want to move up from entry level TEFL then look at a PGCE or post baccalaureate B.Ed with licensure. The pay is much better as are the benefits and career path.

Thanks for that post. I was going to take time out of my day to help you it with some good info, but was unaware of your attitude.
Thanks for saving me time. |
