I was on a trip to Jeju recently, and we bumped into another school from Jeolla-do. Some seemed more tanned, but not so much different than I expected.

Are the people from this area more tanned, in general?

Dude, I have lived for over the past 5 years in the area and the answer is NO. Having spent some time in Seoul these past few weekends I didn't see any difference.

I see what you mean now. Maybe it's because Jeollanam-do is quite rural and there is a lot of farming going on here so they are in the sun more than people who work in Seoul.

Maybe. Just an idea.

It all depends on what tribe their ancestors came from and how the DNA displays itself in one's appearance.

Many darker Koreans are teased. This is why there are whitening products on the market. Rolling Eyes

Ironically, many white people want to be tanned. Shocked

My comment was in general and not aimed at you specifically, however...

Why do you suppose this original question was posted?

Does it make sense?

Would you have any interest in knowing whether the Welsh are more freckled than the Irish?

Well if I was a Korean person working in Wales and I took a trip to Ireland and saw many more freckles on people I might be asking.

He was just wondering if there was or is a difference.

Are you familiar with Dr. Seuss and his ouevre?

Anyhoo, for millennia, certain groups of Koreans have looked down upon those Koreans from Cholla-do, because they are allegedly "darker" (cf. original post), "dirtier", "duplicitous", etc. ad nauseum.

Not impugning the OP, but some "foreigners" here adopt these prejudices as their own, for no good reason.

I just hate to see that happen.

WTF??? Foreigners being predudice (Spl) against Koreans because of where they are from???

I saw the thread as hardly being racist or anything like an attack.

And why do you think the OP was asking this question??? Because he was interested to know or find out. Maybe if he'd hadnt asked his idea of the people down here might have stayed the same.

So if someone asks a question about different skin colour it's put as being an attack.

If I someone who is White I would have usually said they were European or American. But there are South Africans aswell.
Like if a Korean goes to Africa and says why are there white men here? Some one can explain about the history or open their minds.

Back to the question

It comes down to 2 things:
1.Crois is right - Jeollanamdo(and bukdo) were seen as backward farming communities compared to other parts of the country so would spend more time outdoors hence would brown up more than other provinces due also to its more southerly location.

2.It was a bit of a myth perpetuated by the old Kyeongsan backed governments that made Kyeongsan and Seoul look better than their Jeolldo rivals.

Basically, maybe it was true 20-50 years ago but nowdays Jeolldo has basically caught up so with anyone over 40 who hasn't done any farming in their lives there would be no difference in skin color/tone.

Yes, I was curious because I have heard of the Korean stereotype about it all.

Personally, I find the tanned gals MUCH more attractive!
