I have recently learned about these places.

I am curious about anyone's experiences with goshiwons or goshi-tels.

Well *beep* are a lot of fun especially when you feel the urge to *beep*. But then you *beep* and its all over and you feel like *beep*. However all is not lost because after *beep* you can *beep* followed by another round of *beep*.

But is it worth the *beep*. Well yes and *beep*. But its up to your own *beep* preference. Because some people like their *beep* quick while others like theres *beep*.

So yeah its all up to you.

Any serious replies? I am considering it in the future as a place to live for a short while, and would apprecaite any information I can get.

Actually I was thinking about checking out a Goshiwon as well. I did some searching and found out that they are used by university students for studying. They have a reception desk and I'm not sure if you can bring friends over..

From the pictures, it seems teh rooms are pretty clean and decent, range from 25-35 manwon (350$ CDN/month). But I heard they are very very small.. the size of a closet!

If I can't have guests, I won't go there. Yes, they are small, but if it's not a permanent situation, I could deal with it for a few months.

What about Hasukjip (homestay)? Any experiences with that?

At a hasuk jib you will get a bigger room, a friendly ajumma to cook good korean food for you, a cultural experience and generally a good deal

(unless you are unlucky enough to find a bad one.. in which case move after the first month)

At a goshiwon you get a tiny room and claustrophobia.

Goshiwons may be cheaper but factor in the breakfasts and dinners at the hasuk (with the extra comfort) and it's probably a better option.

I've only good things to say for my hasuk experience.

What is the price range for a hasukjip? and how safe are your belongings?

Hasookjips in Shinchon generally cost 350,000-400,000 per month, and they include breakfast and dinner. One potential downside, though, is that the meals are generally served at a specific range of one or two hours. If you can't be there during that time than it's TS for you.

Where are the hasukjips in Shinchon?

I did stay in a goshiwon last year; it had a curfew and there were no guests allowed. On the flipside, there was a 100K deposit and 200K for the month, and I had a TV and a phone (that could only receive calls). Only go for a goshiwon if you're desperate, I suppose. That said, I'll probably end up in another one.

I wouldn't stay at one with a curfew or restrictions like that.

What about curfews at a homestay? And safety of your possessions?

The price sounds good.

I know of one in Hongdae. If you know where Hubble Bubble or Universalis is (board cafe), it's right beside Universalis' building.

I was checking into them recently and the policies vary from place to place. But there are so many of them in the Shinchon area you can just shop around.

Calling a hasookjip a "homestay" is really a misnomer. You're not really staying in some spare bedroom in a Korean's house, they're mostly all big boarding houses with 10+ rooms for guests. Alot have seperate entrances and no curfew as well as no issues about having guests. You also generally get a bigger room than a goshiwon.
