General Shin was arrested on May 8, on charges of stealing 176.9 million won in army appropriations. He is expected to be forced into retirement as early as this week.

The military court released General Shin after sentencing him to pay a 20-million-won ($17,000) fine and damages of 107 million won. The court explained as the reason for its verdict that General Shin's honor and prestige had already been ruined by the legal case, and that he did not seem aware of the unlawfulness of his misappropriations when he committed them. By penalizing embezzlement leniently, the decision can have an inappropriate effect on efforts to root out the common practice of misappropriating public funds in the military.

I posted when this story first broke that the General would be allowed to retire, pay a fine and all this blows away.
Some things never change! The common person would be in jail now! |
