Korea's First Quarter Trade Conditions Worst Since 1988
A Bank of Korea report indicates the effects of higher energy prices and costlier raw materials have dealt heavier blows to the local economy than previously thought, translating into a trade loss of some W7.7 trillion or close to US$7 billion during the first quarter.
This figure effectively puts the first-quarter trade terms at their worst level since the same quarter of 1988.

Here are some words for you.
Despite such record profits for the nation's biggest corporations, Korea's economic growth was mediocre, the unemployment rate for the young people was uncomfortably high, consumer spending was down, consumer confidence was low and credit defaults remain at a worrisome level for government regulators. In other words, record profits by big corporations did not necessarily mean better conditions for ordinary people.
