My brother was stabbed in art class by an exacto knife Shocked

Kid just picked it up and jabbed into my brother's leg. Brother went to the hospital, got a few stitiches, and was fine. Barely missed an artery, though.

There is little difference between an exacto and a box cutter, actually. An exacto's balde is a bit shorter, but it doesn't have a safety catch, so I'd personally be more worried about an exacto.

And having taught a class where I had special education students using circular saws and power drills, I tend to be a little less intimidated by exacto knives.

This is crazy. You sound like Bush....the students have WOMD....should we confiscate them at the door? Metal detectors? Dogs?
Thankfully, Korea is not governed by fear (yet), unlike the US and Canada...if we start viewing the students as "people with weapons", you are opening a Pandora's box. Do you seriously think about this kind of thing? Are you a US citizen?
Change the line of thinking...it's insanely paranoid....I have never heard of a student weilding an exacto knoife on a fellow student or teacher.
Yes, it could happen, but anyone could snap anytime, anywhere and do anything to anyone.
I think the teachers are the ones who should have sharp objects taken away from them. Smile
I generally don't drive my students into blind rage...I don't inspire them enough, I guess.

If this thread was just a joke, then I am sooooooo gullible....sell me a bridge. Wink

DOnt think anyone wants to sell you any bridges because you have already burnt too many.

I like how you have such a high opinion of us teachers here.

Had a BB gun in class the other day (it only fired small plastic things, but enough to kill a pigeon or seomthing).
The co-teacher accidently fired it and the pellet hit the wall and rebounded into a students mouth.
No joke.

My elementary school-aged kids are always running around with medical syringes. They fill them with water and squirt each other, pretend to give each other shots, etc. I complained to the director that this is a serious accident just waiting to happen. And asked her where in hells half acre did they get them? Who would give a child a syringe to play with? She told me they use them in science class, so its OK.

HmmmI guess a kid has to trip and fall, plunging his little squirt-toy into his neck before they decide its better to turn them in to the science teacher every day after class.

Funny though, they never play with their exacto blades.

Don't look now....

But your worst wears just came true.

An 11 year old girl in Japan cut up her 12 year old classmate with an exacto knife and then left her to bleed to death.

Yeah, I don't think that most kids want to stab the other kids in class either. But, my students fight over stupid things, and sometimes I catch them using whatever they can (luckily, usually books) trying to fight each other. If one of them happened to be holding an exacto knife, I can't say they'd be smart enough not to use it. Of course, they haven't, yet.

That said, living in America's "fear culture" does take it's toll.

Of course, my high school almost had a shoot-out in it, too. It was, like all of them, one of those "you wouldn't have thought it could happen" towns/cities.

A kid at my last hagwon brought a BB gun to school and, as far as I know, shot somebody with it on accident. Then the supervisor, holding the gun while yelling at the student, accidently pulled the trigger and shot someone else.

Maybe it is safer just to keep such things out of school...

This is my "ur-box knife":

The "ur-exacto knife":

The box knife has a bigger blade. A retractable blade that is narrower most define as an exacto knife.
