I worked for a Kwak's in Singil-dong, Seoul. It was the worst of the eight hagwons I have worked in over the years. Old, used copies of books in utterly incomprehensible Konglish. Sexist, racist books. Activities consist of repeating phrases of unnatural English. |

Okay, I have not worked at Kwaks. That in mind I have heard many bad stories about them. However that could be hearsay so let's just look at the terms in the contract. Split shifts for 1.9? If you have a BEd and experience (6 years) no way should you settle for one point nine. I just got a job offer in which the recruiter told me that teachers with a BEd and experience generally get about 2.1-2.3 (at least at the schools she deals with).
Nor should you do split shifts. A few people do them and like them, but for most people they are exhausting and quickly burn you out.
To sum up you can do better, quite better. |

i have to agree with the above. you have the qualifications for a better salary. the problem is that the economy in daegu is the pits right now. most schools belong to an association and agree to offer the same salary according to your experience.
unfortunately, experience IN korea is a major concern.
the standard for newbies is 1.9, return air, 10 days paid vacation, paid national holidays, furnished studio apartment, 50% medical insurance paid.
having said that, i must add that kwaks has a shakey past in daegu.
check the blacklists.
you DO sound like a prime candidate for uni work here.
if you can wait until november, the main hiring period will begin for the semester beginning in march.
there is a small hiring period right now for the fall semester.
currently, seoul and busan offer better salaries. but a peice of advice before you sign anything, or get an E2 visa.... come here FIRST, and check out your prospects.
you wouldn't believe how easily promises turn to shit here. |

With your educational background and experience, you should be opting for a much better work situation than you are being offered. 1.9 with split shifts, no thanks. Look at Seoul or Busan or anywhere that offers you a minimum of 2.2, even as a newbie, you're worth that. Split shifts suck. There are better jobs out there. |

Im a kiwi with no previous experience teaching. Im getting 1.9m, no split shifts. And I took only the second contract that came along cause I was keen to get going. Im by no means an expert but, from what I seen and heard here people with teaching related qualifications shouldn't go under 2 mil. If I was to do it over I would have held out for longer to try and get 2m. Split shifts have a lot more bad than good points. |

Are you teaching adults?
When teaching adults remember that most of them usually have time in the morning to take classes or the evenings. That's one of the minuses when teaching them. One of the pluses is the mature behaviors.

If it is in Chil gok do not do it. I worked for this academy and when it was time to get paid he wouldn't give it to me. Then he threatened to kill me. My friend was pushed to do 9 classes straight and when he refused, he was attacked with a gom-do stick. The pay is pretty low for someone with as much experience as you as well. I would keep looking.... |

gonna have to agree that you might regret taking those split shifts when you arrive...and for what it counts, KWAK has the worst possible name in these parts |

Have to agree -- write home and
tell everybody you're now working at
Mr. Quack's Hog-whon in South Korea
and they might think it's a prison sentence |
