Could anyone suggest the differance between the following two senstances gramatically:

I want to be a pilot.

Is it difficult to become a pilot.

I am struggling to define a differance between 'be' and 'become' in these sentances. Is there one?
I say become indicates some change occuring.......

I would say that in the second sentence, the "become" refers to the training - an ongoing process. The "be" in the first sentence only refers to the job, not the training.

I'm probably wrong but on the off-chance that I'm not, I hope I've helped.

I think I agree... I have always thought of "be" as the word to use to describe the static state of being something whereas "become" is the word to use to describe the process leading to the being.

I think of it like a timeline.

Nothing .... >> Becoming ... >> Being

Again: I see become as the process, and be as the end result, the static state of the being.

Sounds almost philosophical... =\

I see it the opposite way, "become" represents a moment of change, while be represents an ongoing state.

Take your two "senstances" Smile and substitute 'to be' and 'become' with the other and see how the sentences change meaning multi-fold

kiwi you're right. I should have written "becoming" as the process. Become is the moment of change. Brain fart =\
