Some more advice:

Irrverent posting is common on these types of boards. It's a fine line between irreverence and an attack and you need to differentiate the two. Just look at Blind Willie's post in this thread. I don't think he was attacking JennyJJ, but that's how she perceived it - as a personal attack. If you look closely at his post, it seems to me he was offering valid advice. This board gives you the opportunity to hone those critical reading skills your professors were talking about back in university.

Second, take a few minutes to learn the BBCode of the board. It's quite easy to use and enhances the readability of your posts if they're formatted properly - especially when quoting others, but also when submitting url's and pictures.

One more (this isn't just for newbies): use short paragraphs. If I see long blocks of indigestable text, I usually skip over the post.

Posts with short paragraphs will be read by more people, and there's a better chance you'll get the response you wanted.

I'm used to dealing with the most psychotic of psychotic expats online. It'd take more than some moaning about not getting a fair shake around here to phase me.

Try to consider what I gave you as some tough love.

I don't tend to use other's threads as my personal "chat line" as so many of the dominators of the board do.

Then you have no right to complain when others do. It's not as if you're being barred from it.

As well, a lot of people here have formed friendships, or at least have met each other in person, and thus it can seem like a "Chat line" but if you go to some of the parties, and dont seem so hauty, then you'll realize that it's just people being people.

Maybe more civilized behavior would be welcome?

The rudeness of many of the regulars on the board, the nasty attacks - and the frequent hijackings are a highlight of this board that keeps many of us away - and discourages new blood and new thinking. That too is okay - if you don't mind its limitations.

See, the only person stopping you is you. No one here is saying "Bugger off " and if they are, you should be willing to step up and say, "Listen, you are so far undernieth me that I wont even bother responding"

Like politics, if you honestly want to see things change around here for what you feel to be the better, you have to roll up your sleeves and participate. Sniping from the sidelines is all good and well, but if you want actual change, you have to make it happen.

If you don't want to see change, then don't bother. Your choice.

There are no secret handshakes or anything, if you want to be part of the clique, then you participate.

Exactly.

Except for the "clique" part. That's just some nonsense used by the sort of person who believes that everyone will hate them anyway. And they do what they can to make sure it's a self-fullfilling prophesy by attacking it and the people they believe to be part of it.

Some more advice for newbies:

Don't ask, "Why are you so rude to Wombat/Harin/Khalifa/sock of the week" if you haven't been around long enough to keep track of the board sociopaths.

Don't hold petty grudges. Don't get angry at people b/c they haven't followed the board closely enough to understand the petty grudges on this board.

Try not to start any "Koreabash / Western women vs Korean women / My hagwon is filled with litte gremlins who like to poke me in the bum" threads.

These will cycle through, as regular as the tides, and you can vent with much gusto and heart whenever they surface.

Don't worry, your time will come. Or I'll eat my socks.

If this is your idea of "tough love" http://www.thepersonunderthestairs.com/users/billomite/korea/ethnickorea.html , then I think you are part of the problem, not the solution. Isn't this the poster that wished all of us teaching here got nuked? As a newbie, I may not know much about Korea, but I can smell trouble a mile away, and I suspect that would be you.

I'm getting a kick out of how everyone's using this thread as a "don't do this!" discussion.

"Don't use the board in a way that annoys me, because it annoys me!"

Feel the angst. Grr.

While I do agree with the sentiment that people should get out more and stop trying to experience Korea from their computer, why do people tend to assume that people with lots of posts are losers?

Yeah, that was a pretty vicious lampooning of the typical ethnocentric expat on my part. I was on fire the week I wrote that.

And, if I were a person like that, I'd be furious at it.

Thankfully, you're not a person like that... right?

Indeed I did. It was very mean of me to say that.

As a newbie, how did you know about what you just posted about me, and be interested enough in me to go through the effort to link it to this conversation?

Haha - Irony, BW - your banner - snazzy as it is - is also too wide for the board if you're using an 800x600 or smaller screen (which I'm forced to in my office). How about resizing it?
