Returning to Canada with a new or maybe a used computer, how much would it cost at customs... anyone know... been here ten months. Any experiences, or anything at all would help.

I bought my laptop in Canada, and carried it through customs leaving and returning a couple of times. It was never questioned.

You just have to tell them that you purchased it at least 3 months before your return. When they asked me I just said about 6 months ago and no problem....

Basically if you've lived abroad you can return with up to $10,000 worth of household goods before you have to pay any tax or duty on big ticket items purchased abroad. However, this only counts if you've been away for a year.

"If you have lived outside Canada for at least one year but less than five years, you must have owned, possessed, and used your personal and household effects for at least six months before you return to Canada to resume residence. If you have bills of sale and registration documents, they can help you prove that you meet these requirements."

But really, I would think if you declared your computer, noted you were an english teacher who worked abroad for almost a year, the customs person would probably not apply the letter of the law.
