Shocked first, i was disappointed that seoul was still so dirty everywhere i went and i stayed in kangnam mostly. i don't know the name of the road but it's the one going south from teheran-ro when you get out of sun-reung(?spelling) subway station, near jin-sun middle school, man, was is littered all over and vomits everywhere. and street vendors were selling things that ought to give one food poisoning right there next to all that crazy traffic. i had imagined seoul to be cleaner than when i visited five years ago as media only shows cleaner areas through k-dramas and such.

secondly, i didn't see any good looking man or woman. you guys said people dress nice and put on a ton of make-up, but as a woman myself, i thought the women's attires were tacky if not gaudy at best. almost half the women had some signs of cosmetic surgery gone wrong with their eyelids or their noses. in fact all the people i saw in the subway car
were not what you would call attractive even a slightest bit.

thirdly, there is absolutely nothing to buy. there are two types of goods for sale in korea. either they are made in korea, cheap baubles with no practical use, or they are foreign imports that are priced four times what they sell for here at Target in the States. and also what kills me is that the majority of the stores were selling the same "goods", e.g. cell phone gadgets. even in insadong, there was nothing i thought was worth my $.

how do you guys survive there??????

We are all freaks.....

Seriously if you find Korea so much i wouldn't suggest travelling anywhere in Asia, Africa or Middle East.
This place is not to bad, a little dirty and chaotic but it has some order.

Just stick to North America and Europe next time and you'll be fine.

This line made me laugh

What did you expect??? You know the U.S. has plenty of bad spots too but I don't see these being shown in American soapies or sitcoms, I think your perspective of the word is a little screwed if you take drama as your guide.

You speak the truth. And i don't know how we survive. Don't listen to all the aapologists/defenders on here- they always play devils advocate. Seoul sucks...the reason we stay are many and varied- and nothing to do with the fantastic shopping.

I think Seoul takes time to grow on you. Once you've been there a while and find out the nice areas to go and if you have a girlfriend and/or a bunch of friends you'll find it to be a lot of fun. My personal favorites are the eating and bang culture. I really enjoy sitting outside at a table a frying up sam gyeop sal and having a few beers. Also really enjoy the chicken and hoff restaurants. Later, going to a game board cafe, a Playstation bang, playing pool, DVD bang, whatever. Then off to a club at night. The city is a lot of fun if you ask me.

I so agree- Seoul is an open sewer of filth and corruption. I cant wait to get out! Only 2 more years and I will have bilked enough to do whatever I want back in "the world"

Butterfly, I am saying this in all honesty, not trying to be a smart ass, but how is the shopping good Can you provide some details?
Years ago I used to find some great bargains on clothes but I think that was because it was 98 and in comparing won to the dollar it was good. But this time around other than buying piss poor quality stuff I think the shopping here is nothing to be excited about, unless you're Japanese.

I found very good clothes buys in the Department stores in Dongdaemun. If you're not the type that needs label stuff ( a massive corporate rip off anyway ) you can get good quality jeans, sneakers, t's, that are sufficiently well designed and cool, for a very good price. Likewise leather jackets in Itaewon.

I don't like Kangnam it has no character whatsoever that I can see. If it wasn't for Kyobo I wouldn't bother going there at all.

Kyobo is in Dongdaemun, unless of course there are two Kyobos?
