| I've hiked DaeDunSan mountain--it was really cool, especially with all the steel bridges and ladders. |

Does anyone know what the deal is about staying at temples? I've done it once before at a place called Songgwansa, we just turned up and told them we wanted to stay overnight. No charge, no booking.
Quite a few other people were doing the same thing, I wondered if this was a unique temple or a general rule? |

| I would recommend that particular travel questions be put in new threads. Therefore, if and when a new forum is created for travel, it would be easier to organize them. |

Good plan... and that "new forum" may happen very soon. There's more than enough call for it. |

Well,
I did Daedundan last weekend..
It was pretty awesome, especially that suspension bridge swaying in the wind that had all the Koreans scared. The scenery was great, just have to kill that cable car. It was a lot tougher than i expected though and I'll have to shape up a bit more for Chiaksan after the summer season.
Lots of accomodation down the bottom and the yeagwon was suffiecient plus the owner was a super nice guy.
BTW...I hope you like Bibimbap as it felt like that was all the sold
BIG TIP: If you live in the South the last bus from Jeonju to any Southern city(Busan, Gwangju, Changwon, Jinju) is around 6:00. I found out the hard way arriving at 6:30 and having to go to from Jeonju to Seoul and then to Changwon. So it took me 14 hours to get home from the foot of the mountain which wasn't to good as I was very sticky amd needed a shower.
All in all an interesting trip. |

thats interesting because the last time I was in Jeonju the last buses at least to Gwangju were at 11P and I think it was the same to Busan.
then again that was 2 years ago but 6P no matter where you are seems a bit early as Jeonju is a decent sized city. |

Well, I had intended to do Chiaksan last Monday but it wasn't to be. I set my alarm but forgot to turn it on. Woke up when my train was leaving.
So, decided to head closer to home and did Dobongsan in the north of Seoul.
I hiked up from the national park entrance where the road does a kind of switchback and there's a parking area. I was hoping for a bit of isolation but even though it was a MOnday, there were plenty of adjuma groups gossiping their way around the mountain. This frustrated me.
What frustrated me more were groups of people doing calisthenics and shouting off the top of some of the peaks (what gives with this?????). In the end, I decided to find my own way.
Best decision I made.
I thoroughly recommend bushwhacking some of these smaller mountains around Seoul. I had a superb time trying to find my way around boulders, down streams, through trees to get to where I was headed. It made the day and I didn't see another soul until I emerged scruffily at the bottom of the mountain. I was back home by 2pm after a very interesting hike.
Anyone else made their own trails like this? |

Okay, a very useful website for potential travellers:
Great Korean travel site
It's got an index of what trains and busses go where and from what station! |

Exactly my thoughts. I was thinking there must be 2 bus terminals in Jeonju as I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't have done that long detour if I could have got to Gwangju. Can someone tell me if there are 2 bus terminals in Jeonju or just the one and I was right or crazy???

I think about 880 metres. Not very high but a good, steep hike. I was fooled into thinking it would be easy with such a small height but I got a shock. I also didn't do the main trail going up but some side bushwacker track through the forest which was cool. |
